Posts about bicycles

Hi Emmanuel,

I just came across a comment by Mary about a bike sponsorship-program in Jinja.

Help to secure a bicycle - Fundraise in your local bike shop

The youths need one or more bicycles to get water for the vegetable project and to go to town to sell their arts and crafts and soon their veggetables. They do not have a bike yet what means that for each way they have to pay a bus or a taxi.

For this task we are looking for fundraising ideas or organisations that would be able to sponsor a bike. A used bike costs around 40 USD and a new one around 75 USD.

Update: We are very grateful for the donation by one neighbor to buy a bike. The youths should soon get it.

I am absolutely thrilled to report that I heard back from Tour D'Afrique yesterday and after exchanging a few emails, we were able to arrange for someone from Arrow Web Hospital to be present at their donation ceremony on March 7th in Nairobi. My understanding is that they will have 5 bicycles for 5 members of the hospital community health team.

We are very excited and so thankful to Tour D'Afrique for making this possible for us on such short notice.

All the best-

Bramuel-

I have contacted:

Tour D'Afrique
Kona Biketown Africa
World Bicycle Relief
Working Bikes Cooperative

I will update as I hear back from them regarding requirements and/or what I find out from them.

All the best-

Jennifer

I would like to get proposals submitted for the bicycles. I really believe we can be successful in securing those for the community health team because the project is focused on healthcare-one of the main areas many of these organizations focus on supporting.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Bramuel and I spoke briefly this morning and I wanted to update everyone on a few things:

1. NHIF

Arrow-Web Hospital just completed it's 3rd month under NHIF accreditation. Bramuel is working on the report now regarding showing the reimbursement level for December 2008. He will get me that information as soon as it's compiled.

2. African Diaspora Medical Project

We have still heard nothing back regarding the proposal that was submitted.

3. Kitchen Table Proposal

Thanks Bramuel-I knew you'd correct me if I was wrong :) So the ideal situation would be 5 bicycles, one for each member of the outreach team.

If you follow the link that I previously posted to the Masaka village, there is a list of several different resources that focus on providing bicycles to developing countries. I would like to get 1-2 volunteers to go through the list and make contact with these organizations via email, or if proposal requirements are listed on the organization's website, to begin working up a draft proposal. Some of these organizations specifically target health care projects, so this would be perfect.

Bicycles for the Community Health Team

Status: Finished

We have been working on research in the Masaka village on the feasibility of obtaining bicycles for students who live far from the school to improve attendance. It occurred to me after looking at several of these sites and seeing how many of these organizations provide bicycles to support health care workers, that this may be a good option right now for the community health team at the hospital.

I talked with Bramuel and he agreed, so we're posting this new task to explore whether or not we might get bicycles for the hospital to utilize until they can obtain a vehicle.
