Water is flowing! Fresh water arrives at Shree Krishna Primary School

Students can now access fresh clean water at Shree Krishna Primary School!

Min is still hard at work raising funds locally so that the water project can be completed. I talked with him briefly this morning and he told me that he's raised all but $50 and hopes to have that secured tomorrow, so all appears to be going very well. Looks like Krishna Primary School will have access to clean water in 2009! :)

Min has talked with the local VDC (I believe Village Development Committee) about the need for water at the school. They have agreed to contribute $100 USD toward the project. We also have a donor willing to donate around $700 USD toward the project budget. This leaves only around $300 left to raise to complete the project according to Min's original budget estimates. He's been very busy meeting with local NGO's and other International Aid organizations and doing a great job gaining local support.

Thought you would all want to know the good news :)

I have started a Twitter account for the project. You can see it at http://twitter.com/Kimilili. Started Wednesday and have 102 people following currently.

Also, received offers of help from a Rotary Club in Santa Clarita, CA and a water filtering company. I'll keep you posted on those contacts.

Lots of people willing to help. We need an easier way for people to donate. Checking into that too.

This is a nice article that explains the rooftop water harvesting method:

Again, not sure if this would be a good option for the school, but again I felt it was worth posting to learn more about the option.

I came across this very interesting video in a blog tonight and wanted to share it with you. The website for the company who created this is located here: www.playpumps.org. Basically, they construct a water well and a merry-go-round that children play on pumps the water. Quite an innovative idea! :) Right now it looks like they just work in Africa, but you never know when something like this might expand.

Krishna Primary School Water Project

Status: Finished

The students at the school in Gamauli presently have no access to clean drinking water while at school. It causes many of them to leave after a few hours in the classroom.

During Min's recent visit to the school, he met with a merchant in the local market and discussed piping water from the market to the school. The cost estimates are attached.

We are asking volunteers with experience in engineering to look over the proposal and make any suggestions or ask any questions that the proposal may bring to mind. We do have a possible donor to help fund the completion of the project.

The following are posters that can be printed off for use in the community related water, sanitation and hygiene. Some communities have had them printed on more durable materials such as cloth or potato sacks or canvas. There are a series of 30 posters. These ones are in English.

Prescription for Health is a DVD put together by the International Development Research Centre. While the movie was made in the 1980s, the messages contained in the movie are still very relevant today. The only way you would know that this movie was made in the 80s is by 2 references to the 1980s. It is great for showing to the community for general sensitization on health, water and sanitation. The file is very large, but below is a transcription of the movie plus a link to the website where the movie can be downloaded.
