Basic Adult Education

Step:

Use this task to discuss issues related to basic education for adults in developing countries.
Tell us a little about yourself and your project. Share your experience of providing basic education to adults e.g. literacy and life skills. Make contact with others who are doing the same. Share ideas, ask and answer questions, learn from each other.

For young adults and older, a component of learning could include modules on Health and Wellness. This could be informal education, in case formal courses are not possible. A bit of orientation in these aspects through an early age could enable people to maintain good health, avoid frequent illnesses, and enjoy all the benefits of a good health of the mind, body, and spirit. Some areas I can think of are:
Yoga
Meditation
Acupressure
Aromatherapy
Herbal remedies
In addition, modules on such subjects could also be included:
Weight control
Balanced food
Hygiene
The focus of Health and Wellness is on the 'preventive' aspects.
Vijai
Literacy and numeracy are important components of basic education.
The BBC Skillswise website provides useful (and free) teaching resources for these subjects (which they call 'Words' and 'Numbers'). The site includes printable factsheets to help teach each course area, and worksheets for the students to practice on.

The website is in English and so it might not be able to be used directly for teaching in developing countries, but it could be a useful starting point for developing the courses.
I used to support the teacher of an adult numeracy course, and the Skillswise site was very useful indeed. The class that I supported was a small one, and it consisted mainly of foreign students whose first language wasn't English. There was one teacher and me, the classroom support. The teacher taught the lesson, and then set questions or handed out worksheets for the students to practice what they had learnt. If any student had a problem I would help them and make sure that they understood.
It was an informal, relaxed class. Adults don't want to be treated like children, so there were less stringent rules than you'd find in a (children's) school classroom. And they need to feel comfortable enough to ask questions when they don't understand something. The teacher needs to be sensitive to the fact that some adults may be embarrassed that they don't know some of the things taught in these classes. I think that part of the skill needed to be a basic education teacher for adults is to reassure their students that there's no shame in not knowing something; that's why they're there - to learn.
Hi. I got into the adult education field several months ago. I did this by taking many free online courses. I am still taking some. A few months ago I attended a workshop. I could not believe how much stuff I already knew simply by taking free online courses. This week I am starting my new job. I am helping a man learn to read.
