Vocational/Trade Skills Training
Status:

Step:
1
Use this task to discuss issues related to vocational skills training in developing countries.
Tell us a little about yourself and your project. Share your experience of providing training in vocational/trade skills at a school, training centre, or in the community. Make contact with others who are doing the same. Share ideas, ask and answer questions, learn from each other.

We established a tailoring training unit for girls and boys who have dropped out of school. Unfortunately these young people are too poor to pay for the maintenance of a trainer. What ideas do neighbors have to help this category of people.

Hi Stanley
If you train students in tailoring, I am assuming you have sewing machines? As well as using them for teaching students, can they also be used to make items to sell? That may be one way of making money.
As I only created the new tasks today, the discussions are only just getting started, I would recommend that you also follow what happens under the Self-sufficiency task as that may also give you some ideas.
Mary
Hi Mary,
thanks for that brilliant brainstorm you had to generate all the different tasks in different areas of focus.
Yes we have sewing machines and could be used to make items for sell but at the end of month could not raise enough money to pay for the teacher. And usually teachers leave and we get stranded with machines and students.

I posted this under the old general task a few months ago, so am now adding it here too so that it is in the correct section

A while ago I came across a guide on how to do a market assessment for the best training to provide at a vocational training centre. It is produced by the Women's Refugee Commission based on their research in northern Uganda. The majority of the information will be relevant to any centre I think.
Its at

Neighbors, seeking you help; is this the platform i can discuss both nursing and tailoring training?
--
Stanley Okurut
Hi Stanley
Yes it is, unless you feel that your nursing training fits better under Higher Education - it may depend on the education level of those being trained and what qualifications it leads to. But its fine to discuss both here.
Mary
Thanks Mary for good work. I want to encourage that some attention here be given to locate and source out training resources for vocational courses: in our case for nursing. Because after secondary education, there is need for skills training. Nursing offers good employment opportunities. The employment market is still large. How can we be helped to acquire relevant training books and other resources for nursing training?

Hi Stanley
Try having a look at some of the information under the Finding books, school supplies and other equipment task. Some of the organisations that donate books etc may have items that are useful to you.
Have you spoken to people at other nursing schools in Uganda, to find out where they get their training material from? Maybe it would also be possible to link up with similar schools in other countries too.
