Volunteer teachers: Finding and making best use of volunteers
Status:

Step:
2
Many schools use local or international volunteer teachers.
Share resources on how schools can find suitable volunteers.
If you have worked as a volunteer teacher, was it a positive experience, what did you gain from it, and what did the school gain from it?
If you are a school that uses volunteer teachers, how did you find them, and how do you ensure that you make the most effective use of their skills?

Efforts could be made towards cyber-teaching.
Teachers need not be physically present in the classroom. They could comfortably teach from their own homes from their own countries.
All that is required :
- at the teacher's home in any country - a computer with internet, webcam and microphone.
- at the classrooms - a computer with internet, webcam and microphone, a data projector and a large screen.
Communication between the teacher and the students in the classroom can be through skype or any such services which are quite common and reliable.
The audio-video interaction with the teacher can be projected through the data projector on the large screen for all the children to see. The webcam and microphone in the classroom will permit 2-way interactivity of the children with the teacher.
Lessons can be recorded and projected any number of times. Internet is not required in this case. CDs of these lessons can be freely passed around to other schools where internet and teachers are not available.

Hi every one,
Singh, this is a very good idea, cyber teaching, i have seen it work for some rural schools in with well established ICT facilites.
My question now is, how do we incorporate this idea to rural schools with;
1. no electricification
2. No ICT/ computer facilities
3. No ICT literacy, though training may be availed.
Being a volunteer teacher some time back, there is alot that one can learn;
1. There is direct contact with the students, which opens the environment for easy knowledge of the children/ students you are dealing. in this i mean the there is a teacher- student collaboration.
2. The volunteer gets to learn the culture (if not his/hers), the living conditind of the people he is dfealing with.
3. Exploration, which makes adventuring more interesting
4. There is mutual understanding between the partners and the schools.
5. It is intersting to know other poeople out side your "comfort zone"
Kind regards
Moses

Moses,
The answer to the first part of your post:
- No, you cannot have e-teaching or e-learning without electricity, without a computer, and without internet.
About the second part of your post:
- e-teaching is useful if you do not have enough teachers in your region
- e-teaching exposes your students to the best inputs at international levels
- e-teaching could be a lot cheaper than the expenses on direct-contact teachers
In case you depend on direct-contact volunteer teachers, I do not see a continuity of teaching, since you will always be looking for another volunteer teacher before any teacher leaves. This is despite all the benefits of direct-contact teachers mentioned in your post.

Hi singh,
thanks for your deliberation, i guess then one has to find those services before cyber teachinfg can get on board

You're right, Moses. You need to focus on the real issues - starting with electricity.
Get info' on what the local authorities in your region have planned to get electricity to your area. Alternately work on options in solar electricity.
You will still need an internet connection. See if the wireless footprint of the internet service provider touches your area. If yes, and you can manage solar electricity, and have a computer - then you are in business.
Till this happens, I wish you luck in your search for direct-contact volunteer teachers. I sincerely hope it works out well for you.
Cheers

Dear all,
Many of you are looking for volunteer teachers. A friend told me about a great website that allows volunteers to find hosts and projects to register as hosts.
More information can be found here http://www.workaway.info/information-for-hosts.html
As always, it is very important that once you register you give as much information as possible about your project, the work the volunteers should do, where they could stay and eat, about leisure activities etc. You have to tell them why a stay in your project will be a great experience for a volunteer. And also put a photo!!
Would be great if you could post about your experience here, if you recruit a volunteer through this site.
Good luck,
Maria
Thanks Maria
I have passed your link on to Christopher in Masaka village as he is looking for volunteer teachers for their secondary school.
If he decides to register, and finds volunteers through the site, I will let you know.

Hi everyone
As part of Notre Dame High School's search for volunteer teachers which is still continuing, we created a simple document describing what kind of volunteers the school needs, and what volunteers could expect. We also created an application form.
If anyone wants to use these as a starting point for creating similar documents for their own volunteer programme, they are attached to this task, which also contains links to some sites where you could advertise volunteer opportunities.
Mary.
HI everyone
A while ago I was looking for places that Notre Dame High School (Nabuur Masaka) could publicise their need for volunteer teachers, and found several websites where organisations can list volunteer opportunities for no cost.
I have passed these on to a few other people recently, so thought I should share here too.
