Improvements for facilitators

Status: Finished

Facilitators, you make it all work. How can we help you get things done quicker and easier?
I'd like to hear your input on these questions:
____
1. How can we improve organising and running the projects?
2. Helping facilitators help eachother, how best to
share your experience with others and how to educate and stimulate more neighbours to become facilitators?
3. What is the one thing you would change on the site that would help you most?
___
Thank you so much for your time and effort in sharing your thoughts here!
Roy

In terms of actual project facilitation-I think the villages work just fine for the most part with the exception of: 1. Making a post (it looks very intimidating and way more complicated than it actually is, but scares people away). 2. The resources section-we need to be able to post resources like we used to. Not everyone should be deciding what becomes a resource. 3. Gallery-it's fine as it is, however I think it would be nicer if it could be set up into photo albums. Also, posting multiple pictures in a single post shouldnt result in all pictures being titled the same thing. 4. Shared work documents-I despise wikis. There has to be an easier way to have a shared work space. Outside of those 4 things, the major issue with the site again is seeing where you go once you log in and actually finding your way to an open task or village. The addition of the volunteer opportunities page I think has helped tremendously. I'm not so sure that the new village search is working as well. People can't seem to path their way around the site easily at all. The end goal is to get them to a particular village (project) and able to find a task that they can work on or group discussion that they can contribute to. If they can't do that-everything stops. I would recommend following a group of brand new users and noting their observations live and in person and see where they get stuck. Then do the same for more experienced users. One of the most difficult things about Nabuur in the past and even moreso now with the new site is actually finding the projects that are active. Inactive projects, or projects that are completed accomplish nothing in terms of productivity from volunteers trying to find an active village to contribute to. We've said this over and over again. If they remain visible, they need to be put in a containment area where it is VERY obvious to a user that there's nothing going on with them at the moment. Again, this is a process issue, not a design issue, however it does apply in this case because it contributes very much to how difficult it is to actually find an active/working project. Roy, in response to that I have to go back to my original message. In terms of actual project facilitation-I think the villages work just fine for the most part with the exception of:

One of the most difficult things about Nabuur in the past and even moreso now with the new site is actually finding the projects that are active. Inactive projects, or projects that are completed accomplish nothing in terms of productivity from volunteers trying to find an active village to contribute to. We've said this over and over again. Three more things: I would like to be able to set up due date, task leader and contact info for the tasks in project room. Right now is difficult to have a structured project.

Those discussions are all here and I truly hope you have access and read every word of them. Having this discussion again just feels like we're saying the same thing over and over again and it and "beating it to death." The information is there. It's hard to feel motivated about repeating myself and summarizing again. In an effort to try and remain positive, I will answer your questions: 1. Hi Roy-

I saw your posts this morning and feel I need to be honest and admit to you that I am not very eager to have these discussions again about redesign. Many of us have put substantial time and effort into testing the existing site and providing tons of feedback over the past year about what we like and don't like about it-what's working and what isn't. Having this discussion again just feels like we're saying the same thing over and over again and it and "beating it to death." The information is there. It's hard to feel motivated about repeating myself and summarizing again.

In an effort to try and remain positive, I will answer your questions:

1. How can we improve and organize running projects-I see this as completely a process issue, not a website issue. I think that topic belongs in a different discussion.

2. Helping facilitators help each other-again something that belongs in a different discussion, not about web design. The current ability to access/edit all villages works sufficiently to help someone out if ever the need be for that.

3. One thing I would change about the existing site-I'll give you two, #1 make it FASTER and #2 SIMPLIFY.

I think its important to recognize that parts of the site existed prior to this current version and they work well. Other things were changed for this and they worked better before (i.e. the Resources tab).

Anyway, for now, that's my thoughts. I appreciate your enthusiasm and hope it will be infectious as we move forward.

Kind regards-

I am another who has put a lot of effort into this discussion since this version of the site was launched last summer, reporting bugs and suggesting improvements, some to the site, others to the whole Nabuur process. So rather than repeating all that again, I guess I would be interested to know if you have had a chance to read that discussion, and what thoughts you have on how the site could be improved? I agree with Jennifer 100% about the site speed - at times it runs absolutely fine, but it regularly grinds to a halt and is consistently the slowest website I have ever used. Also about simplification - it has to be easy for people, especially people visiting the site for the first time, to quickly be able to find their way to village pages so that they can see what Nabuur is about. Sorry if this all sounds a little negative, its not intended to be, I think Nabuur is a great idea, and would very much like to see it working well. But I believe that the current problems go much wider than the design of the site and that the whole process needs to be looked at again. Hi Roy

I really have to agree with Jennifer that its kind of hard to get enthusiastic about another big redesign - since I joined Nabuur in mid 2005, there have been about 4 different versions of the site, all of which have been advertised as big improvements, all of which have had big problems.

Sorry if this all sounds a little negative, its not intended to be, I think Nabuur is a great idea, and would very much like to see it working well. But I believe that the current problems go much wider than the design of the site and that the whole process needs to be looked at again.

I would like to be able to set the order of the tasks within a step. Also to give the steps names, as I only ever used them to logically split tasks into groups, not really to show the sequence within the project. Like Jennifer I don't like the current wikis as they are not easy to use, especially when it comes to formatting information. On the Project Room list it is not clear which are tasks, which are wikis which can cause a lot of confusion. The majority of wikis are associated with a specific task, but there is no way to link them together (I get round this by putting links into them both but that is not an ideal solution). The chat function does not work. The one on the previous site worked but was very slow. Would like to be able to have chat at village level, also between individual neighbours. Currently, to view the finished tasks in a project, you have to click on the project name. This is not at all obvious, there needs to be a button to list all tasks as there was on the old site. It should not be possible to post to a village without becoming a neighbour. Many people do this and only make a single post, maybe because you only get notifications of new posts to a village if you are a neighbour, so they don't realise things are happening (and probably struggle to find their way back to the village to check). I would like to receive notifications of new posts by email. Various Profile and Village pages suggest this should be possible, but it stopped working when we got the new site (worked fine before that). This may also hellp to increase activity on the site. Having said all that, I do not really think that it is the individual village pages that are causing most of the issues. Every site redesign has hoped to improve activity but has not done so. Hi Roy

I agree with everything the others have said about the village pages, so will try not to repeat anything.

Hi Roy

In mid-April you wrote that as well as site design you were also going to be looking at overall Nabuur processes. Please can you explain how far this review is going to go?

I mean, is it all stuff related to the site or are you also going to look at the wider issues of inactive villages, new villages, lack of central staff support to villages etc?

I could give many many examples of these, but as you have already read the other threads under this Group, you will have a clear idea of the issues that have been raised by many volunteers, not just me.

This way I get a snap shot of what's going on. I haven't posted via my mobile yet but will do so over this ocming week and see how it goes and report back.
Thanks!

We're taking a step by step approach and I just posted updates on our current plans for a simpler signup process for both individual nabuur members as for the village signup. Especially for the latter it would be good to have your input there, I think it's very important we set the right expectations when signing up your village and what it means to become a local representatives. http://www.nabuur.com/en/group/nabuurcom-website-development/project/task/redesign-update-new-signup-process-individual-membe http://www.nabuur.com/en/group/nabuurcom-website-development/project/task/redesign-update-signup-process-local-representative And my apologies, I see you posted this some time ago already.
