What Nabuur can do - and what not: Define Expectations for Local Rep and Village Sign-Up

Status: Just started

One of the things we hear a lot is that some volunteers who join NABUUR aren't sure of what to expect. They're excited at first to have found a network such as this one, but their expectations may not match the reality of what NABUUR has to offer.

If NABUUR is going to cater to its members' wants and needs, and forge long standing collaborations and connections, let's it make it crystal clear from the get-go to about what they can expect from their experience here!

The aim: as part of the sign-up process, every Neighbour and Local Representative should have a clear indication of what to expect when they join NABUUR.

In this thread is where expectations for Local Rep sign-up will be collectively defined.

The idea is to develop some slides on "what Nabuur can do for me - and what not".

Dear Carolyn,

Thanks for commenting on the document - we are getting there :)
You are right that we have to think again about the role of a facilitator or buddy. The two terms came up before and during the camp, but were not defined. Additionally, if we discuss now in the facilitator group how the faciliting system could function differently with country and thematic responsibles, we should probably consider this as well. The rough idea is that a LR discusses his project with some neighbors before getting started and that he/ she has somebody who is ready to help him in case of difficulties to set up tasks etc. This person could be a member of the country or the thematic group, and not committed only to one village but be in the background to assist.
Any other ideas?

It would be great if you could help to put together the information for facilitators - have a look under the task for material for facilitators, I saved all the documents there. Unfortunately they are mostly in PDF format and it would be great to have them all in one document or slideshow. I´ll ask Raul who made most of them, if he still has the originals.

Thanks a lot,
Maria

Maria I took a look at the majority of the documents for facilitators. There are so many :(
Even if we do take on the suggestion of a thematic group/country group facilitaor role- outside of this the traditional role of the facilitaor still remains. So ideally a resource for this person should cover the basics about project management on Nabuur. I don't believe we are in a position to write Guide for facilitators using the Website because at this stage we don't really know how different it is going to be.

I'm not sure how quickly i can get this odne as I am now studying again, plus full time work. So if there is a pressing time frame on this then perhaps I am not the right peson to do it. Otherwise I will beging to make suggestions over the next month or so.

To have a large database of neighbours, facilitators etc without commensurate activities and results will amount to a waste of useful time and resources. I am glad that the present thinking is in that direction. However, I think every member of the Nabuur community should be self motivated and in addition to that there should be mutual benefits: Between the nabuur platform and the facilitator; the neighbours and the LR; facilitation and facilitator's career, objectives, etc;LR and the community etc. These benefits can only be defined by individuals but we can provide the enabling environment. The goals of this forum is to find how these benefits could be defined and harnessed in the overall interest of making Nabuur platform an activity fill platform. Everyone should be driven by the benefit of his objective and goal.

the most important is guideline and let it be simple ,so that people can join in big number without facing any problem when doing the registration of villages

Hi all-

I was wondering if in your work you came up with a document that addresses two things:

1. Is online volunteering right for me? or maybe, How do I know if online volunteering is right for me?

2. Is Nabuur the right place to post my project?

I have immediate need of something in writing that addresses these two issues for contacts/requests for help being made via the Nabuur Facebook page. Ideally, what I would like to do is post a note that addresses these two topics so when questions arise, we can direct people to that information and eventually incorporate this into the new Nabuur site as well.

I know UNV has a section that talks about both issues, but it would be nice to have something Nabuur specific. If we don't have something existing or in the works - would any of you be interested in writing something up?

Thanks-

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer

Don't remember anyone writing anything recently.

About the only info I know of on why to become an online volunteer is on the FAQ page (which has been out of date for years....)

http://www.nabuur.com/en/group/meeting-place-new-local-representatives/p... gives some tips on what makes a successful project on Nabuur - not sure if that is what you are after as it assumes some knowledge of Nabuur, and that every village has a facilitator.

Apologies, I don't think I have time to write something.

Hi Jennifer,

Here is the document I told you about I drafted for a new registration process for villages. It includes some basic questions for local representatives to answer before registering. Hope this helps.

best,
Maria

Hi Jen,

I'll dig around to see if we have something Nabuur-specific, but somethings tells me that we don't.

However, the TakingITGlobal/Nabuur guide on online volunteering does go into whether someone is right for online volunteering (albeit with more of a youth-focus). I attach the PDF guide for reference, just in case.

I really don't think we have anything either - the TIG/Nabuur Guide is great, but it's too big for using on Facebook. I'm thinking something very simple that could be put in note format. If you've noticed the last week or so, we've been getting more people expressing interest in getting help from Nabuur, or who want to post a project and still may not really understand what happens here.

Maria's draft document on the sign up has many of the points I think would be critical to make, but I can't use that document as is - I'm looking for a quick type of cut/paste into a note type of thing. Doesn't have to be fancy, but needs to cut to the chase about specifics like - Nabuur does not provide funding, if you can't be online - its not likely that your project will be successful here- that type of thing.

The other option would be to post this as a discussion point and direct people there and see if we could use the Facebook discussion area as a means to help people decide if this is the right place for them or not. Either way though I still think a really simple FAQ or this is what Nabuur does/does not do would be good to have up and accessible to the Facebook crowd.

The "is online volunteering right for me" I think is less of an issue on Facebook than the "is Nabuur the right place to get help for my project" question.

I was actually thinking we could use bits and bites of the guide (not attach it in its entirety - it's not all relevant) and from Maria's document. But that would involve doing a quick gather of all the info (plus include more info for the new local reps) and put it into a quick read-through document.

Sorry, can't do that tonight. Is anyone else willing to give it a go?
