We Want your Ideas 2.0! How else can NABUUR use Social Media?

Status: Just started
Step:
1

These days, you'd be hard pressed to find an organization, business, or individual that is NOT using social media.

To get geared up for the brainstorm, take a look at the platforms that NABUUR is presently on. (See the links here.)

In the past couple of months, NABUUR has improved on and extended its presence online. The platforms we chose to focus on primarily are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

We're now looking to go further with these platforms, and the others were NABUUR has a presence (regardless how 'small' it currently is), and we're asking for your ideas:

What do you think is working; what doesn't work (and why)?

How else would you use the tools we're currently using?

Do you recommend any other platform or social media tool available out there?

Hi Jen,

Thanks for starting us off! As always, some practical thoughts in your message...

NABUUR Blog

- Most of the posts do have pictures attached to them, though some of the volunteering announcements ('do you want to facilitate a project') or NABUUR news (announcing the BlogTalk Radio show, etc.) do not. If you think the look of it is too bland, I agree we could do a better job spicing it up.
- Great suggestion on the 'share this' button! I'll see if we can implement it right away.
- Re: linking to other platforms. If you scroll down, below 'contributors', you'll see a list of links leading to other platforms, including Change.org, YouTube, which you mention in your next points. (But your point begs the question, are these links too hidden?)

YouTube

Can you suggest other NGO's we should look at for pointers?

Twitter

Ha, this is something I wonder about too. Generally, most organizations who tweet will do so during their 'business hours'. In our case, because we're technically based in NL (except for me), our business day ends just as many other countries start theirs. I try to tweet in the afternoon/evening once in a while, but I can't get to it always.

There are applications that enable future scheduling of tweets, but I personally feel that takes away from the spontaneity of Twitter. But I agree, we should work something out so that tweets are more evenly spaced out.

-> We could entice a volunteer to tweet on our behalf during 'northern' timezones (would this interest you, Jen?)

Flickr

Fully agree - we need to liven up this platform! Maybe there's a way to coordinate village pictures with our Flickr gallery. I believe there was mention of that during a redesign meeting, I'll ask the team. It would also be an idea to encourage online volunteers to take pictures of their work (sitting down at their computer; at a fundraiser; meet-up, etc.) Not all the pictures need to come from the villages on the ground.

Hyves.nl

I'm told this platform is the Facebook of Holland. We're working on getting someone, based in the NL, to maintain and promote the NABUUR group there.

I'll let the others add their thoughts, but again, Thank You for your suggestions!

After you mentioned the links to the other platforms were there, I looked again and noticed them. After I saw them it seemed like I should have seen them or at least remembered they were there, but I didn't. I don't think it's necessarily a case of being too hidden, but rather not attention grabbing. Maybe make them bigger? See Shawn's on www.uncultured.com? One thing I don't like on the blog is the white background. The green is easier to look at like on the old blogger site. Maybe you could add some static content-like a video from Siegfried about why he started Nabuur, or pictures of the Nabuur staff w/brief profiles. I think if you're linking people to posts on the blog, it's important that people who may not know what Nabuur is be able to easily and quickly access some basic info about the organization. You Tube: I have to say when I posted yesterday, I hadn't looked at the You Tube channel and was basing my comments on my memory of it, so apparently it's gotten a makeover, or my memory is bad. Two that come to mind to look at would be Charity: Water and Shawn's Uncultured Project. Shawn's in particular is highly followed/popular. What I notice with both is that they contain a profile-Nabuur's does not. They also both have a banner and their channel is formatted a bit differently than Nabuur's. Shawn also includes links to Twitter, Facebook, etc in his You Tube channel.

You Tube:

I have to say when I posted yesterday, I hadn't looked at the You Tube channel and was basing my comments on my memory of it, so apparently it's gotten a makeover, or my memory is bad.

Hi Jen,

Re: Images. Yup, we'll try to embed them into the text from now on. (In fact, Frans did that with his latest post on DrupalCon.)

I never thought about how those linking to our blog may wish to see in a glance what NABUUR is about. A 'NABUUR in a Nutshell' (be it video or text) would come in handy here.

And yes, YouTube did get a makeover recently. But I like the idea of adding our other platform links.

Thanks, Jen. We'll work on these and get back to you...

Hi guys

A quick comment from someonw who is not a Facebook expert....

I am a fan of the Nabuur page, and for the last few weeks have been seeing the Friday messages on my Home page saying that this week's update is in my inbox,

I assumed this meant that I would get the update via email and on my Inbox page but had never seen it (had been meaning to query this but not got round to it!)

Until today when I realised that it does not show up in my main Inbox where I see messages from friends and groups I belong to (which I also get email notifications of) but in a separate Updates section. When I get a new Message this shows up on the Inbox tab at the top of my Facebook pages (i.e it says something like "Inbox (1)" meaning I have one new entry), but this does not appear to happen for Updates from Pages.

So I totally missed the volunteer opportunities!

Not an issue for me, as I will probably have heard about them from another source i.e. this website, but could be for others.

Is it possible to change the way these messages are communicated to page fans, to make them more obvious?

Mary

This being said, I know that the updates are getting to the fans (maybe because they check their inbox many times throughout the day) but I'll keep posting a notice each Friday on the wall. I can also copy the update text to the 'notes' tab in FB (right now, only NABUUR blog posts are fed there). I've submitted feedback on this to FB***, as I agree that the old way was much better and other page admins (non-NABUUR) agree, too. (Although some people apparently complained that too many 'notifications' got in the way - you can never please everyone!)

This being said, I know that the updates are getting to the fans (maybe because they check their inbox many times throughout the day) but I'll keep posting a notice each Friday on the wall. I can also copy the update text to the 'notes' tab in FB (right now, only NABUUR blog posts are fed there).

*** EDIT: I just checked the FB feedback/bug submitting thread, and the issue has been raised by many page admins. As of yet, FB has yet to respond. Let's hope they bring back the notification flags!

Hi all,

We've had some pretty enthusiastic reactions on the NABUUR Twitter background, so here's a few thoughts.

1. I could pretty easily make the current ones (here and here) available for all NABUURs (you could also just 'take' it from the Twitter page), but I could also make a background that says: I volunteer on NABUUR.

Good idea? If so, what should it say? What colour?

2. For the villages on Twitter: If you'd like your own NABUUR background, just send me the picture you'd like to show + the name of the village, then I'll fit them in the NABUUR template

Pelle
