Matopeni neighbours struggle with funding as the recession affects fundraising efforts across the board
Facilitator Ildikó Stormbom of Matopeni Village in Kenya made the trip to the village to meet with Local Representative Stephen and the local children who would benefit from funding to create the Boston High School. The Matopeni Community Development Board has donated land and building work is coming along for the school, which focuses on providing a boarding facility for young girls who would otherwise be precluded from secondary education. Pregnant girls as well as those who have given birth will be welcome and the school will serve as a drop in centre for girls from the most oppressed parts of Kenya. This includes those rescued from female genital mutilation (FGM)
The Kenyan Government have promised teachers to offer adult education in the evening.
Ildiko’s visit is documented on the Matopeni Village page, but she spoke of her heartbreak as, of the young people with excellent exam results at junior level, only a few could go on to secondary education through the generosity of their sponsors, the rest have to stay at home where a life of crime seems the only option.
