Find out all about NABUUR Storytelling - and get started here!

Welcome NABUUR storytellers!
In this space, you'll get a chance to learn how to write a NABUUR story, and also be able to pick and choose stories that you'd like to write.
While in your travels on the NABUUR.com website, if you see a story in development or anything else that catches your eye, let us know here too (even if you don't have time or plan to write on that particular story - we'll find someone else to take it up!). And from time to time, we'll also suggest stories and assign them to those interested in writing them.
Below is a brief how-to of NABUUR storytelling (also available as download attached to this post).
Where to find the stories?
The number of Villages and projects on NABUUR.com is expanding quickly (see here) - and so are the corresponding stories!
Stories can be found just about anywhere in a NABUUR Village: in the News tab; in the Image gallery; or in the discussion threads in the project room... If you're unsure if something will make a good story, post your suggestion in this thread and we'll help you out.
You can also find stories in the general NABUUR news tab here.
When writing a NABUUR story, please follow this format
- Each story starts with a picture.
- Each story has the name of the Village and the country mentioned.
- Each story has a catchy title, referring to the result.
- Please upload it to the news section (see how-to below).
- A NABUUR volunteer will be notified and edit the story (if needed).
- Once the editing is complete, we'll publish the story (crediting you, of course).
Please note: Stories don't necessarily have to be a certain length. If your story is featured on the NABUUR blog and it's a bit on the longer side, we'll be happy to post the story as a multi-part.
Content
Each story has the following structure:
1. The issue, the situation in the community as it was prior to the Village joining NABUUR.
2. Details of the the "result", including the process, and the role the online volunteers (Neighbours) played in it.
3. The changes/improvements brought on by the result.
Interviews
You may also want to interview a couple of the neighbours and the local representative. If you need help in getting in touch with them, let me know. (An idea would be to post a message in the discussion thread telling them you'll be covering their story; or to send them a private message to initiate the conversation.)
Who can help you write the stories?
If you need more details on a development or would like to clarify information in your story research, don't hesitate to contact the Local Representative of the Village, the Facilitator or the Neighbours. They're there to help - and expect to be contacted. If you'd like assistance in making this contact, let us know.
What do you do when you've finished writing a story?
The storytelling group and process will be as transparent as possible. When you're done writing your story:
Your story will show up in the respective village, as well as in the story section of the NABUUR News tab. We'll also use some of the stories for our blog, as well as other social network platforms, like Twitter and the NABUUR Facebook group.
To upload your story to the news section:
1. Click the News tab of the storytelling group.
2. Under the 'Create Content' heading box, click 'Create News.'
3. Fill in the following fields of the form: Title of the story, location, the teaser, the body, and upload a picture of the village corresponding to the story. (We'll worry about the other fields :))
4. Click Submit at the bottom of the page to save your story.
Ready to start?
Feel free to browse the Villages on your own. You can find a list here towards the bottom of the page. Once you click on the link leading to a country location, you'll get the list of Villages in that country - as well as a description of their project.
Another option is to do a keyword search for Villages that match your interests or preference (i.e. Education; Women's Rights; HIV/AIDS).
Once you pick a story, please post in this discussion thread. We'll keep track of who is writing what.
Alternatively, if you wish to only be assigned stories, let us know!
Need some examples before plunging in?
Attached is a storybook compiled last year. Feel free to download it and get a feel for a NABUUR story. We hope you enjoy it!

Hi everyone,
The Village of Nakyerongosa in Uganda is looking for a storyteller to tell about its project: integrated community managed water hygiene and sanitation. You don't need to be an expert in water management.
If interested, please familiarize yourself with the village, and let us know by posting a reply here so that we can introduce you to the local representative of the village.
Thanks,
Romina
Hello Romina,
I would love to work on this story. I am already a member of the Nakyerongosa Village and had helped get them about 20 votes last week on the GiveMeaning site for the Nakyerongosa water and sanitation poject proposal.
Please let me know what the next steps are.
Thanks

Hi there,
Koliyonkulam (http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/koliyonkulam)wants to publish the stories of the children in the Evening School, but the current descriptions are a bit too dry and mechanical. If you are interested in helping with telling the kids stories- please visit helptrust.org- all the kids information is listed there. Also there is some info in the attached document. Let me know if you are interested.

Hello Tanja,
I would love to work on writing the stories about the kids in the evening school. Just let me know where to begin! I have visited the site and agree with you that the stories could be more interesting. I'd be glad to help... :)

Hi Muna,
Excellent! Not sure if I shared the presentation that HELP put together- there is more information about the kids there (although probably duplicates whatever is posted on helptrust.org). I will attach it just in case. It will be great if you have a chance to chat with Jegan- he is very dedicated to the school and spends a lot of time there, so he knows much more about the kids. I will shoot him a quick email to let him know you may need some additional information. You can contact him directly at tjeganbose(at)gmail(dot)com, my email is tanja(at)volunteer (dot)nabuur(dot)org.
If you want you can start with the story of - A.Arvind Raja(slide 10 at the presentation),it has most details. For the other kids the facts get a bit repetitive, they have all sad stories, but in a way they all sound the same and do not really explain how the Evening School helped them. Sharon wrote a very nice story for Rama (it is on Nabuur's home page), that really highlighted the before and after.
Best regards,

Hello Tanja,
I have finished a first draft on the story about A.Arvind Raja. i hae sent a copy of the draft to your email as well as Jegan's. Please review and let me know what you think.
Cheers!

Hi Maimuna,
Thanks for your interest in Nakyerongosa...I see you'll be working on the Koliyonkulam story (great news!), but do you have time to write up the story on Nakyerongosa as well? We don't want to overburden you. ;)
Let me know when you get a chance, thanks!
Romina
Hi Muna,
Thank you! I like the story- it is very optimistic :) Is it OK to move this discussion to Koliyonkulam-under the first task; it will be easier for Jegan and the rest of the neighbours to follow - http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/koliyonkulam/project/task/storytellers-...
Have a good weekend!
Tanja

Hi Maimuna,
I am Mary Lusambo Local Rep for Framar village in Kasama, Zambia.
I wanted to just find out whether you want stories from any village. I may wish to have you write a motivational story about an "Adult Student".My village has embarked on an Adult Literacy Education where mothers and fathers who had no opportunity to complete their education are now learning and are zealous. It is exciting to see such a thing happening in my village. If you may write a story that would encourage my people who have resorted to learning at an older age. Please respond and also visit my village.
Stay blessed.

Hello Mary,
I would love to write a story about the 'Adult Students'. I think it is an amazing thing to give adults a chance to get an education. Give me the information I will need to get the story going, and we can go from there!
Cheers!

Hello writers :)
I would like to add a post to the Arrow Web Hospital blog about what it is like to have Malaria. World Malaria Day is April 25th and would like to have the post added as soon as possible-it doesn't have to be very long, but I would really like for the piece to be from the perspective of someone who has experienced this and what it meant to get treated. We could also consider posting from the perspective of someone who may have lost a friend or family member to Malaria.
I would like the post to also contain some basic information about Malaria, treatment and current health statistics in Kenya-especially the impact on children. Arrow Web Hospital treats many children and expecting mothers-about 56 babies are born each month at the hospital.
If anyone is interested, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help!
Hi Jennifer,
Hope this finds you well. I think I can help out with the Malaria post, just tell me what you need (assuming there's more to it than the description you have already given here) and I'll get it done.

Pat-thanks so much for your response. That would be fantastic if you can help with this. I sent you a private message here on Nabuur with some more details.
I look forward to working with you on this.
