CAWST - Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology

The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) is a registered Canadian charity that provides professional services - education, training and technical consulting - to organizations that serve the poor in developing countries. CAWST doesn't fund or implement projects. Instead, we provide the services that are the catalyst for independent, community-driven water and sanitation projects.

This approach...

* Empowers, motivates and generates grass roots action within the community;
* Provides opportunities for continuous learning and support;
* Generates multiple, independent actions required to reach the UN Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation;
* Has improved drinking water for 1,125,000 people in 49 countries since 2001; and
* Is driven by a vision of a more equitable world.

Our vision is a world where people have the opportunity to succeed because their basic water and sanitation needs have been met.

Our mission is to provide technical training, consulting, and to act as a centre of expertise in water and sanitation for the poor in developing countries.

Services:

* Training Programs ... to get you started or to expand your skills and knowledge
* Consulting & Support ... to sift through the volumes of technical information, provide technical support, or to coach and encourage
* Technical & Program Evaluations ... to assess your project or to teach you how to self-assess
* Network-Building ... to encourage sharing of best-practices

CAWST also offers Learning Aids for community water, sanitation and hygiene. All posters and educational materials provided on this website may be freely distributed.

The biggest problem of the village is flooding which is usually very heavy and destructive. One of the serious effects of these floods is contamination of water and lack of hygiene, because the latrines are washed away and human waste gets mixed with water used by people. In many flood events there is an outbreak of water borne diseases, especially cholera which kills many people. Even in the absence of floods there is syill a serious problem with sanitation. People rely on water purification medicines which are provided but not always used properly. Inasmuch as we all know the importance of boiling drinking water, this is not possible for many poor people because they find it difficult to get enough firewood even for normal cooking. It would really help the community if there were more permanent wells. again they need some extensive training on keeping the wells clean and free from contamination. This knowledge is non-existent and yet it could help the community groups to ensure the safety of their water. The problem of sanitation cannot improve without stronger toilets which can resist the flood waters or remain intact after the flooding. I believe that the neighbours will have a lot of input which I could onpass to the community. We have a lot of schools that need urgent solutions and even within our own project (Zindua Dada Center) there is a big problem of toilets being washed away and at present the more than 100 young children who will be attending school there will be expected to share 2 or 3 temporary latrines. But when floods come, we have to start all over again. I will appreciate your ideas and look forward to feedback on this. Please help this community reduce vulnerabilty and lead healthy lives. Hi Roger,

I am not actually with CAWST. While they are a Canadian organization based in the city I live, I do not work for them. I have only received training from them and have materials that they offer to share with individuals and organizations. I have posted the materials in other parts of this village. To make a formal partnership with CAWST, you would have to contact them directly or have another organization sponsor you.
