Do you know of any organizations that work specifically in water and sanitation? If so, this is the place to list them.

Please provide as much information as you can about the organization including name, website link, email addresses, contact information and a brief overview (what they do, where they work, etc).

CAWST - Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology

The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) is a registered Canadian charity that provides professional services - education, training and technical consulting - to organizations that serve the poor in developing countries. CAWST doesn't fund or implement projects. Instead, we provide the services that are the catalyst for independent, community-driven water and sanitation projects.

This approach...

* Empowers, motivates and generates grass roots action within the community;
* Provides opportunities for continuous learning and support;
* Generates multiple, independent actions required to reach the UN Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation;
* Has improved drinking water for 1,125,000 people in 49 countries since 2001; and
* Is driven by a vision of a more equitable world.

Our vision is a world where people have the opportunity to succeed because their basic water and sanitation needs have been met.

Our mission is to provide technical training, consulting, and to act as a centre of expertise in water and sanitation for the poor in developing countries.

Services:

* Training Programs ... to get you started or to expand your skills and knowledge
* Consulting & Support ... to sift through the volumes of technical information, provide technical support, or to coach and encourage
* Technical & Program Evaluations ... to assess your project or to teach you how to self-assess
* Network-Building ... to encourage sharing of best-practices

CAWST also offers Learning Aids for community water, sanitation and hygiene. All posters and educational materials provided on this website may be freely distributed.

Lifewater International is a nonprofit organization that helps developing countries gain access to clean, safe water, and improved health through sanitation and hygiene.

Lifewater recognizes that water, sanitation, and hygiene are essential to health. Without them, people are put at great risk for a number of diseases.

Lifewater's work involves water well drilling, hand pump repair, water filter construction, and sanitation and hygiene education.

Lifewater currently works in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Ecuador, Zambia, Southeast and Central Asia.

Lifewater is committed to meeting both physical and spiritual needs. By embracing a holistic view of human needs, it aims to alleviate suffering and trigger community-wide transformation at all levels. Many partner agencies incorporate Lifewater training with their existing ministries, sharing about God’s love and even planting churches in villages where they do water development. Without discriminating, and in partnership with trained nationals, Lifewater offers both safe water and the love of Christ to all those who thirst.

WSP Water and Sanitation Group
http://www.wsp.org

The Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) is a multi-donor partnership of the World Bank. Our goal is to help the poor gain sustained access to improved water supply and sanitation services (WSS).

We work directly with client governments at the local and national level in 25 countries through 4 regional offices and in the World Bank headquarters, Washington D.C. Our aim is to achieve the Millennium Development Goals of halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation by 2015.

For almost thirty years, WSP has led or supported many of the advances made within the water and sanitation sector. We are able to share best practices across regions and place a strong focus on capacity building by forming partnerships with nongovernmental organizations, governments at all levels, community organizations, private industry, and donors. Our work helps to effect the regulatory and structural changes needed for broad WSS reform.

Our challenge is to replicate successful approaches, continue targeted learning efforts, and support reforms that will ensure the adoption of sustainable investments in the sector that in real terms help people rise from poverty.

Hello Barbs,
I have joined the Water and Sanitation group with plenty of enthusiasm to learn as much as possible and find ideas to assist my community. The biggest problem of the village is flooding which is usually very heavy and destructive. One of the serious effects of these floods is contamination of water and lack of hygiene, because the latrines are washed away and human waste gets mixed with water used by people. In many flood events there is an outbreak of water borne diseases, especially cholera which kills many people.

Even in the absence of floods there is syill a serious problem with sanitation. The water table is very low and the pit latrines are always shallow, so they fill up fast. The soil is waek and any little disturbance will bring the structure down. In fact in many homestaeads people simply do not have toilets! Drinking water is not as safe as would be expected. People rely on water purification medicines which are provided but not always used properly. Inasmuch as we all know the importance of boiling drinking water, this is not possible for many poor people because they find it difficult to get enough firewood even for normal cooking.

It would really help the community if there were more permanent wells. again they need some extensive training on keeping the wells clean and free from contamination. This knowledge is non-existent and yet it could help the community groups to ensure the safety of their water. The problem of sanitation cannot improve without stronger toilets which can resist the flood waters or remain intact after the flooding. I believe that the neighbours will have a lot of input which I could onpass to the community. We have a lot of schools that need urgent solutions and even within our own project (Zindua Dada Center) there is a big problem of toilets being washed away and at present the more than 100 young children who will be attending school there will be expected to share 2 or 3 temporary latrines. But when floods come, we have to start all over again.

I will appreciate your ideas and look forward to feedback on this. Please help this community reduce vulnerabilty and lead healthy lives.

Thanks,

Lillian -LR Budalang'i village.

This projects was initiated by a group of individuals in the village and so Guinness Cameroon decided to stretch his hand of fellowship to us and it became a reality.presently we are doing everything possible to open up more water tanks to satisfy the needs of this small village than has gone for a long time without clean and portable water.

Hello Lillian,

Thank you for joining the water and sanitation group. I hope you find some good input here.

I am not a water expert, so I can only provide information and resources, but I can look over some of the resources already provided and see what is available. I will also try to find out some information specific to the problems facing your community, although since I am not a water expert, I can only gather information and hopefully you will find contacts that you can follow up with.

Also, I think there are other communities that face similar situations related to flooding. Maybe there are others here that can share their experiences.

If anyone has any information, ideas or comments, please post them here.

Hello Mohamed,

Thank you for joining this group and posting about this project. Do you have any other information about the work being done? Is there a website or maybe some examples or lessons that others can learn from?

Thanks,

Barb

Another group that works on water and sanitation issues is Engineers Without Borders. Here is a link to the Canadian site that has some good information on some of the work they do, including a pump. Thanks to Paul for providing the link in another thread.
