Back to School for the Students at St. Charles Special Needs School
St. Charles Special Needs School is located in Ghana. The school has 4 teachers, 2 professionally trained and 2 who are not. At the present time, there are 22 children with disabilities enrolled at the school. The school serves both boys and girls and children range in age from 5 to 25 years. Disabilities include; Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, mobility impairments, visual impairments and speech problems. Some of the children are diagnosed with multiple disabling conditions.
Lesson plans center around teaching the children basic activities of daily living such as brushing their teeth, bathing, dressing and feeding as independently as possible. Children also learn how to perform household chores such as washing dishes and sweeping. As they progress, some are taught gardening and livestock rearing. It is the hope of the teachers and parents that the children will develop sufficient skills to one day be able to participate in income-generating activities and independently care for themselves to the extent they are able.
To support the educational efforts, the school is in need of additional teaching materials. All materials should be in English.
Examples of items needed include:
1. Puzzles-both cardboard and wooden
2. Legos
3. Coloring Books
4. Crayons
5. Picture books including people, places and things
6. Dominos
7. Memory Cards
8. Pencils and Writing Materials
9. Footballs and outdoor games
The Atulibabisi Village is seeking people who may be willing to donate one or more of these items for the children at the school. Maybe you have some of these items laying around the house because your children have grown and no longer have use for them. Perhaps you know of resources that might be contacted to request donations and/or organizations where we can apply for funding so that the materials needed can be purchased locally. We are certain if we join hands together, we can provide the children at this school with additional resources to help them learn and thrive.
We welcome you to join us in the Atulibabisi Village!

Bertha was 14yr old when she got enrolled in the school. When she was 7 she was sent to a regular school. Her behaviour in the Special school upon enrollment was not too good. She tore any piece of paper she laid her hands on and chewed chalk. She was not sociable.Afer being in the school for 4yrs now,she has become so friendly with everybody. When she finds chalk on the floor she picks and gives it to the class teacher, she carries her books to and from school without destroying them. Now her parents say she plays with other children in her neighbourhood.
I think this story can be an encouragement for other parents to send their children to school. There is hope for everybody especially for children with special needs.
