The St Charles Special Needs School has been established with the aim of giving hope to the mentally retarded whose parents and guardians have given up on them.The school is a government-run one and as it is with government institutions the resources are not adequate and not much attention is given to it.When it comes to persons with disabilities, it is the physically & visually challenged and the deaf and dumb that one hears of.The mentally retarded are not mentioned.The school has been in existence since 2005 with a roll of 22.The roll could have been higher if resources were adequate.The school authorities have not relented in their efforts in sustaining the school under the circumstances.They appealed to some organisations who have come to their aid by donating furniture for their classrooms,providing a workshop for vocational classesand even the land that the school was built on was donated by the Catholic Church.
The school still needs some other resources; a bus to convey the children to & from school since their homes are distant from the school.This can also serve as encouragement for more children to go to school,learning and teaching materials and outdoor games.Even though awareness creation of some sort is going on ,we need a comprehensive awareness creation program.These are the tasks that I hope Nabuur can help.
