IDENTIFY RESOURCES: Supplying Training Materials for Special Education Classroom

Status: In progress
Time needed:
Two weeks or more
Step:
2

St. Charles Special Needs School is located in Ghana. The school has 4 teachers, 2 professionally trained and 2 who are not. At the present time, there are 22 children with disabilities enrolled at the school. The school serves both boys and girls and children range in age from 5 to 25 years. Disabilities include; Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, mobility impairments, visual impairments and speech problems. Some of the children are diagnosed with multiple disabling conditions.

Lesson plans center around teaching the children basic activities of daily living such as brushing their teeth, bathing, dressing and feeding as independently as possible. Children also learn how to perform household chores such as washing dishes and sweeping. As they progress, some are taught gardening and livestock rearing. It is the hope of the teachers and parents that the children will develop sufficient skills to one day be able to participate in income-generating activities and independently care for themselves to the extent they are able.

To support the educational efforts, the school is in need of additional teaching materials. All materials should be in English.

Examples of items needed include:

1. Puzzles-both cardboard and wooden
2. Legos
3. Coloring Books
4. Crayons
5. Picture books including people, places and things
6. Dominos
7. Memory Cards
8. Pencils and Writing Materials
9. Footballs and outdoor games

For this task, we are asking volunteers to identify potential resources that might be contacted to request donations and/or organizations where we can apply for funding so that the materials needed can be purchased locally.

DONATIONS can be sent to the school using the following address:

The Head of Unit
St. Charles Primary School
Special Unit, Box 5
Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, Ghana

Hi Gladys-

I have a few more questions for you:

1. School bus-Can this be purchased locally? If so, how much does a school bus cost? Is there a place to keep the bus on school grounds? Who will drive the bus? Are their any particular requirements or licensure that you have to have in Ghana to drive a large vehicle like this? Is there a particular model/make of bus that will work better than another? 2. Teaching/Learning Materials and Games- What is the age range of the 22 students at the school? How many teachers are at the school? What skill training is provided in the workshop? Looking forward to your response-

I am approach various organizations to find somebody who is able and willing to provide second hand special need school materials free of charge.

In proces I encountered an interesting website with free special need school materials. I understand that some cost would be involved in printing it, but we might look for sponsors to do so. I cannot judge whether the materials on this site are interesting or not for your school.
