NEEDED: Volunteer Teachers and Therapists

St. Charles Special Needs School could use 2 volunteers for addressing the special education needs of children with disabilities, provision of therapy, and above all to share their experiences with teachers and children.
The school is NOT able to pay for lodging, food or transportation expenses. School authorities CAN provide information about safe and decent lodging, good meals and local transportation depending on how much the volunteer can afford to pay.
Due to local regulations, volunteers must approach the school on their own. The school cannot request volunteer assistance. Volunteers from two organisations, MeetAfrica and VSO, came to the school on their own to work with the children. When it happens this way, then there is no problem.
For this task we are looking for ways that we might make others aware of the school and generate interest in helping on the ground in the classrooms. Again, the catch is that the school cannot request volunteers, prospective volunteers must independently approach the school with offers to help.

Hi Gladys-
I wanted to let you know that the International Association of Special Education Teachers has a volunteer program. They send volunteers-Special Education Teachers, to developing countries. They come to share their expertise and knowledge with the school and teachers working to help students with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities.
Their website is located here: http://www.iase.org/?home,1
Under "Volunteer Service Project" in their menu, you will see a place marked "Forms." There is a form located there for people to request that volunteers come to their site. This would be what you need to fill out and submit for your school to request volunteers.
I hope you find this helpful and look forward to talking with you further about your project.
All the best-
Jennifer
Gladys-
Here is a list of 241 different volunteer organizations that send volunteers to Ghana. Not all are education related, but many of them are. The nice thing about this list is that the organizations have been verified.
http://www.volunteerabroad.com/Ghana.cfm
This will take some further research and making contact with the organizations to find out if they accept requests from projects seeking volunteers and if so, what are their requirements to submit a request. Some may have established sites only that they work with.
If you use this option, I would be very careful to specify that you are seeking volunteers with experience working with students with disabilities and/or that you would like someone trained in the area of Special Education.
I think it will be very important to clarify exactly what you are looking for in terms of volunteers on the ground to help at the school. For example:
1. How many volunteers do you want?
2. How many volunteers can you take at one time?
3. Is there a place for the volunteer to stay?
4. How long would you like the volunteer to stay?
5. What would the volunteer be doing at the school?
I think if you clarify the answers to the questions on the form the International Association of Special Education Teachers has outlined that you will be well on your way and this can then be referenced for other inquiries.
All the best-
Jennifer

Hi Gladys,
I think it's important to think about what kind of volunteers you want, how many, what their task will be, where they can stay etc. Then we can try to help you finding volunteers.

Warm regards, Lotte
Hi everyone,
Hope you are fine.I have gone through the links for volunteers.I have found out that some organisations have limited area of operation which does not include Ghana whilst others state on the request form that the institution is expected to provide lodging, meals and local transportation for the volunteer. The school will need two volunteers for teaching(special education for children with intellectual disabilities) & therapy. The school will not be able to provide lodging, feeding & local transportation. However the school authorities can arrange for a safe and decent lodging, good meals and local transportation according to how much the volunteer can afford to pay since the costs of these services vary.Their task is to help in the teaching and rehabilitation of these children and above all share their experiences with the teachers and children
Gladys
Hi neighbours,
The volunteers that the school is looking for will teach the children ( special education for children with learning disabilities what used to be known as the mentally retarded). The school also needs therapists as volunteers. In our previous discussion we mentioned some of conditions that some of the children have. These are Down Syndrome, autistism, sight & speech disorders.
Hoping to hear from you all.
Gladys
Dear Gladys,
Sorry for keeping quiet for such a long time, I am finishing my study this year, so I am a bit busy.
Great that you are thinking about the volunteers and how to get accomodation for them. maybe you can contact VSO. It's an organisation which is sending good trained volunteers to developing countries. This is their website: http://www.vso.org.uk/ hope they can help you!
Otherwise I can give you some more names of organasations which could help.

Warm regards, Lotte
An other qeustion do you have a website? Because a lot of volunteers try to find you via the internet. When you don't have one maybe we can help you create one.

Warm regards, Lotte
Great to hear from you again. We have no website and I hope you will help me create one
Thanks
OK I can create one for you, it will be a simple one with some information on it about you and your project. And information for volunteers. When the website is created we can ask other volunteer websites to create a link to our website. Do you have some pictures which can be placed on the website, some pictures form the school, teachers, children, your village?
--
Warm regards, Lotte
I sent some pictures to the village gallery.I don't know whether we can use the same ones.Let me know if we can.
Gladys
Hi Gladys,
I can use the pictures form the galeery for the webiste. I'm building it at the moment. Will take a week or so to complete. Ih have some questions for you:
- Does the school have a volunteer coordinator or will that be you. When volunteers will come to you, they need 1 person to help them gettting used to the new life style, explain them about the school etc. So if their doesn;t exist one it will be a good idea to ask who wants to get involved with the volunteers.
- Do you want the volunteer to pay money to be a volunteer at the school. At the moment i did write that you don't ask money to participate in the project. But volunteers need to pay for their own accomodation, food and travel. I did also write that it would be great if they could give you a money or material dontation. Is that OK?
- Then I was thinking about the materials you would like to have in the school. Maybe we can create an account on http://www.stuffyourrucksack.com/ and ask people to take the materials you need with them when they go on a backpack trip?
--
Warm regards, Lotte
The school head or one of the other teachers will be the volunteer coordinator. The other issues you raised about the accomodation, food and travel and also the monetary and material donation and every other thing are all OK..Thanks very much for your efforts.
Gladys
Hi,
I will be glad if you could create an the stuffyourrucksack website.I tried creating one but along the line there was a question on the places thtat I have visited which confused me.
