Help Complete the Construction & Development of Keframa College

Status: In progress

The KEFRAMA COLLEGE Project has been initiated by Barr sub-county community members in partnership with Lango Youth Action For Development(LAYAD). Once classes begin at the school, we intend to continue working in partnership with them and focus on development issues at a grassroots level - such as the promotion of income-generation activities to support the school.

This project aims to tackle one of the many problems that affect members of this community-lack of basic education. The area is mainly rural and families face a lot of difficulties coming up with the resources necessary to allow their children to obtain a basic education. The literacy rate in the community is very low. Even though there is one government aided secondary school in Barr sub-county, the government has not supported it with adequate infrastructure and teachers. Many families are not able to send their children to school due to the looming poverty level in this area due to the Lord’s Resistance Rebels’ activities that forced almost all members of this sub-county to the internally displaced persons’ camps for when rebel activities were intense.

Our Mission is to provide education to the vulnerable children who reside in the rural areas of Barr so they would not be deprived of education based on their geographic location or family financial circumstances. KEFRAMA College has received a plot of land donated by a retired head teacher from the local community. The KEFRAMA College Project will focus on completion of the school building as well as securing appropriate scholastic materials to promote quality education among the students.

At the present time, construction of the our first two classrooms is underway. Our goal is to have these classrooms completed by December 2010 and ready for students to begin classes in February 2011. Our Vision for the future is that eventually we will develop the school campus beyond the initial two classrooms to include:

• Additional Classrooms
• Vocational training centre
• Toilet facilities
• Playground
• Office space for school administration
• Staff room
• School library and laboratories
• Students’ hostel
• Teachers’ Houses
