WE NEED VOLUNTEER TEACHERS TO TEACH OUR STUDENTS DURING THIRD TERM 2011( SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER 2011) THROUGH 2012.

KEFRAMA College, which is soon to become a project under KEFRAMA Youth development Foundation(KYDF) started after consultations with the community. Because this part of the country suffered from the insurgency caused by the Lords' Resistance Army rebels(LRA) from 1986 till 2006, the need was great. Many families lost their loved ones in the hands of the rebels. Consequently, many children lost their parents and remained as orphans. Some homes eventually were headed by children who had remained. The cost of education in such familes became unberable by the children and elderly relatives who had remained. As I worked within communities educating the population about the HIV/AIDS scourge, I realised I needed to do something. I strated by allowing one of the orphans to live with me in my house and sent him to a vocational centre where i paid for him to acquire vocational skills. Since the number is great, I decided to consult the community and some of my friends. Eventually, I became interested in setting up a secondary school that would give these children an opportunity to be in school and study. It took some time before this could come to fruition. In 2009, we started building a structure that would allow us to begin allowing the children to start school. The first two blocks were raised each consisting of two rooms. Two of these rooms are being used as hostels for the children to stay in...one for girls and one for boys. In 2010 January, the first school term opened with 60 children turning up and starting lessons officially. The name of the school(which is a high school) is KEFRAMA College. The children studying at KEFRAMA are great to laern from. They are joy to stay with and to write their stories. Those who will accept to volunteer their service at KEFRAMA will help teach the children subjects like Physics, Biology(animals and Plants), English Language, Entrepreneurship skills among others. There is also great need to link the students with international friends and part of the work volunteers will do shall involve identifying and introducing the children to friends outside and helping them write and post letters to them.Volunteers will all stay in one rented house. The kind of houses here in Uganda are quite different and we ask our volunteers to be prepared to stay in houses that are worth living in but not like the ones found in great cities.Who We areKEFRAMA College is a community based secondary school, dedicated to working with children/students, their families and communities to overcome illiteracy, poverty and injustice.Inspired by Christian values, we are dedicated to working with the community's most vulnerable families and/or children/students.We serve all people regardless of religion, political affiliation or gender.Who we work withKEFRAMA College operate in Barr sub-county majorly, working with the natives of the sub-county. It is a sub-county with a population of about 16000 people, greatest percentage being women and children. Their main economic activity is peasantry farming.Project DescriptionThe rationale behind the construction of the school is in response to some of the problems being faced by children from these poor families as a result of Poverty caused by both long period of political insecurity and long draught. The school seeks to introduce a scholarship scheme for the best performing students in termly examinations and promote basic life skills, and computer lessons, in a safe and quiet environment providing the students with opportunity for employment after school. This means that children will be able to get some forms of employment once the complete ordinary level education from KEFRAMA College.BeneficiariesThe beneficiaries of this project shall be Orphans and extremely vulnerable children at secondary education level as well as children from unpreviledged families whose parents cannot afford the high school fees and these shall be children from the sub-counties of Barr,Aloi, Omoro, Apala, Amugu, Abako, Adekokwok and Amach.Project DetailsKEFRAMA Coolege has received a land donated by a retired headteacher from within the community which shall contain the following structures:ClassroomsVocational training centreToilet facilitiesPlaygroundsOffice space for school administrationStaff roomSchool library and laboratoriesStudents' hostelTeachers' HousesIf you would like to volunteer at our school, please write a hand written application, scan and send to our e-mail address: keframacollege@yahoo.co.uk. Phone
Name and Contact Info of your Volunteer Point of Contact:
Executive Director of KEFRAMA College: Mr. Okello Augustine Kezzy
Can you provide accommodations on site? If so, discuss the type of accommodation you can offer.:
Volunteers can stay near the school. It will be a rented premise. This can of accomodation will be having a pit latrine and bath shelter within the compound.
Tell us about your area, and any additional reasons why volunteers would be drawn to coming and volunteering with you.:
This area is an area that suffered from the insurgency which was caused by the Lords' Resistance Army Rebels. It is an area with only one government aided secondary school. Because of high levelof poverty and high number of orphanned children, children drop out of school because they or their parents cannot afford paying the high school fees levied by many schools. KEFRAMA college came into being as an alternative for them. It is where they will acces almost free education as their guardians contribute food only. Volunteers will therefore help aid the learning process of these children and will help us minimise cost of teacher salaries.
Recommend nearby accommodation options for volunteers, such as hostels, hotels, eco resorts, etc.:
If Volunteers are willing to meet the cost of better houses in Town(10 miles away from school) and the cost of transportation to school, then they will be free to stay in Lira Town and travel to school according to schedule. There are good Hotels and better houses in Lira Town. Volunteers can get in touch with us to arrange with the Hose owners or hotel officials if they want to stay in Town and we can help them effect payments or negotiate monthly figures for rent if they need to rent one house that all of them can stay in for the entire duration of their stay with us.
What best describes the cost of your volunteer program?:
Low-Fee (small fee to offset costs for individual host)
Anything else you'd like Volunteers to know?:
Volunteers can also refer to the school website www.keframacollege.org for information about the school. KEFRAMA College will also in the near future be a project under an organisation that is soon to come into being: Keframa Youth development Foundation(KYDF). So, in the near future, they might also want to be involved with other project activities that will be initiated by KYDF or rvrn work with KYDF in Future.
