Hi Paul
This does not really fit under any of the currrent tasks, but I thought you may be interested to read about what they are doing in Kisozi http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/kisozi/news/2009/11/25-beneficiaries-re... among other places.
Instead of seeking ongoing sponsorship for each child as Help Liberia are doing, they are raising money and giving children goats. The child has to give the first female offspring back to the organisation so that it can be passed on to another child. The hope is that over time the family will be able to make money by selling milk and young goats, enabling them to pay school fees and other living costs.
I remember you telling me that you are considering introducing tuition fees for some students, so something like this may make that possible for more families to begin to pay. It also helps to make the family more independent.
I don't know if this would be a practical option for you, but may be worth considering something similar in the future?
Mary
Hi Paul
I know we don't have an open tasks for books at the moment as you are still trying the potential donors that were posted already but thought you may be interested....
Came across this via a post about libraries in Sierra Leone made to Kohat village which you might find interesting as it describes how they set up a community library http://cipsierraleone.blogspot.com/2007/11/project-proposal-public-libra... which is used by school students and others who pay a small fee to borrow books - the money raised is split between the librarian and the organisation who runs the library.
This led me to the Foundation for West Africa http://www.tfwa.org/ who work with an organisation in LIberia called CREDO, see http://www.tfwa.org/edul1.html
FWA in association with Sabre http://www.sabre.org/ in the US ship books to CREDO who distribute them to schools in Liberia.
It does not say how they select the schools but says "CREDO: circulates available titles and content to teachers throughout Liberia; receives teacher requests for specific titles and quantities of books; sends requests to Sabre, which prepares books for shipment."
Although this is dated 2007, hopefully its still ongoing.
I have not succeeded in finding any contact details for CREDO, but if you cannot find them either maybe FWA or Sabre would be willing to put you in touch if you ask, so that you can ask whether they would consider providing books to HLF school.
Mary
Hi Mary,
Thanks for the info. I knew about this group -- years back. CREDO used to donate supplies to schools in Liberia, not all schools, though. I don't know much about their activities at the moment. But, on this one, the leadership of the school in Liberia could contact them since they are on the ground.
On the library idea, I think it is great. We will copy the idea the day we set up a community library. In fact, the school had earlier planned to do exactly this when we received the seven boxes of books last months, but the ministry that donated the books advised against charging any fees for the use of the books.
Merry Christmas!

Hi Paul
Yes definitely sounds as though it would be a good idea for someone at the school to contact CREDO and see what they say.
Its good to hear you are thinking about setting up a community library, I have read of other successful examples from around the world. I think I already posted a link to http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/bukoggolwa/project/task/brainstorm-opti... which includes several similar examples of how this has been done. If people can use a bit of imagination, its amazing what you can do!
I guess the books from the government were intended to be used solely by the school students. But hopefully if you are successful at getting books donated you will be able to use those to set up a library, you would need to check with the organisations to confirm they are OK with you using the books like that, it would be a good idea to mention it on any future applications you put in.
Merry Christmas to you, and to all Buchanan neighbours, too :)

Hi everyone
Paul sent me the following update on the current tasks via email. I will also add this information to the relevant tasks, closing any that are no longer required.
Mary
------------------
Update from Paul:
Books
We wrote all the organizations whose addresses we got for books. Only two replied.
The first was International Book Project (IBP). We exchanged a few e-mails. Then they gave us information about how to complete the application form, which we did.
By the way, it was discovered that they already have a local book distributing organization in Liberia. The NGO is known as YOSHEDEA.
IBP indicated to us that they are planning to send some books to Liberia sometime this spring, and they promised to include a consignment for our school. We will inform you when the books are received by our school.
The second was Biblionef. They responded to our e-mail and sent us their application to be filled out, which we did and sent back. However, we have not heard from them since.
Sewing machines and typewriters
We contacted all of the addresses we got, but none of the organizations has replied yet. We are still waiting.
Shipping items from Poland to Liberia
On this discussion on the forum, some suggested that Poland was the best place for the problem to be solved – meaning, we should check for/seek information in Poland. Well, we have done just that, and we’ve found no organizations to help.
We talked with one priest who sends things to central Africa, and he gave his advice on sending things to Liberia, but the bottom line is that we have to pay. However, we don’t have the money. That’s why we are soliciting assistance.
We also contacted a currier agency located in Krakow. It’s called Cargo-Partner. They indicated that the starting point is 200 euros, and this is for 50kg. As we do not currently have money to pay for shipping we need to decide whether this is a practical option or not.
Self-sustaining endeavors
During the discussion on the forum, many suggested ideas were presented. However, in line with the old saying, “cut your coat according to your measurement,” the school is seriously considering the following ideas:
1. soap-making
2. sewing
3. gardening
We will fill you in with relevant information in the future when any of these projects is started. Many thanks to all of you for your ideas and participation in the process.
Dear Mary, Paul & all,
Good to see you, always busy for making number of attempts. As you mentioned you tried for books but two of them replied, good news but I think it's difficult to get books from them if yes, then the major problem how to pay shipping charges?
I also made efforts to get some books, after waiting a lot I got positive reply from International Book Project. But I'm worried about other requirements.
I'm not pessimistic but I think if we being LRs work our selves & will try to be independent it'll work better rather than waiting for expected help from others, who may accept or reject our requests.
It's also great saying, "Self done is well done".
I mean in our limited resources, according to the local conditions if we serve our efforts after a few months we'll be rewarded with fruitful results.
I like & appreciate your ideas:
1. Soap-making
2. Sewing
3. Gardening
It sounds good to be independent rather than depending on others. Wish you've a good time.
Best regards,
Adnan Khan.
Hi Adnan
Its good to see you back online!
You are right, getting books is a challenge. As I understand it, International Book Project pay for the cost of shipping so both Buchanan and your project should be able to get the books from them without having to pay anything.
I agree with you about communities doing as much as possible for themselves. That is why it is good to see that HLF School have started to look at the options for income generation.
It may be that they can start these on their own without needing any outside money, but they may need a little. Having clear plans for the businesses and evidence that they are prepared to work for themselves, that they have started to do things on their own and will continue to do so, makes it more likely that they will get that support.
Mary
Hi Adnan,
It's nice to read a line from you.
I agree with you that we should go for independence. That's why self-sustainability should be the goal but, as you may know, many new organizations are like a baby -- in many instances, somebody needs to assist them in one form or another to be able to reach that independence.
For example, if a struggling, but determined, organization in an African village wanted to provide computer education to the young people of that village, it wouldn't be able to get computers of its own resources. It would need to ask relevant organizations to help.
It's true that it's extremely difficult for these big or assisting organizations to reply or assist, but that shouldn't cause us to give up. I know it's frustrating, but let's keep trying.
Take care, buddy.

Hi Paul,
Good to see you with optimistic reply. Carry on my dear.
Kind regards,
Adnan Khan.
Hi Marry,
Sorry,I went all of a sudden to Quetta city & couldn't inform you. But yes, now I'm back.
As you mentioned about books, so I'll try to fill their form & then see what's their reply?
Take care,
Adnan Khan.
Hi everyone
Some good news from Paul - the school has received books from Biblionef. Although he had not heard any more after sending in the application, the books recently arrived in Liberia, a nice surprise!
He is waiting for some pictures - once he has them he will post them along with more information.
Many thanks to all at Biblionef!
Mary
Good news! Mary.
Congratulations, Paul.
Regards,
Adnan Khan.
That's welcome happy news! Congratulations to Paul and the students, thank you also to Biblionef!
Jennifer
Hey, folks!
Yeah, we are happy about the books. Everyone in our school is excited.
We all did it together. So, thanks for your involvement and encouragement, too.
As Mary indicated, more info will follow later.
Happy weekend!

Hi everyone
As Geoff has now obtained sewing machines and typewriters for the school, I have closed those tasks. We will keep everyone updated on the transportation to Liberia here in the Project Room.
I have also closed the task looking for ways to ship items from Poland to Liberia, as there has been no activity for the last few months, and it is most likely to be solved by HLF members in Poland.
This means that we don't have any active tasks at the moment. Paul and I will be creating some new ones in a few weeks, once the school has decided what they would like us to focus on.
So please don't go away as will need your ideas again in the future :)
