Brainstorm Ideas To Facilitate Transport For Students & Teachers To Get To School

Status: Needs urgent help
Step:
1

The community is asking for assistance in finding solutions to provide transport for the students and staff of Bukoggolwa Secondary School.

Transport takes one of the most urgent priorities, as it not only facilitates access to the students, but also facilitates transporting of school supplies and other services beneficial to the smooth running of school programmes.

Hi
This is a very good and viable project and relevant to nabuur's objectives.

What i like about it is the fact that that you have the interests of learners at heart hence the plea for the said transport needs.
secondly, with transport, students will be able to reach school in good time thus be able to attend lessons promptly.

From your appeal, i feel that you have been too general and your needs are not specific.

Probably you would have started by telling nabuur neighbors what you have been able to achieve so far and how you were able to do that.
Allow me to suggest that you start by by calling parents and members of the community and explain to the need for transport.

Ask them What their ideas are and how they can come in.

Come up with a committee which will note down the community's contributions.

As a community, sit and agree on the best way to approach the good ideas by the community.

Think of way of raising funds through involvement of community.

Some of the possible ideas would be:, Community walks to aimed at raising funds, competitions, ruffle tickets etc.

Whichever way you may decide, having raised an amount of money, then you can now approach international possible donors whether from nabuur or otherwise.

As a project you could also come up with a comprehensive proposal that would attract donors.

If you could could approach Anne and or Romina, on nabuur, this two members can be able to advice you accordingly.

I dont know what other members will say about your project.

Otherwisw i wish you success, I was just contributing hoping that this adds value to your eforts in your otherwise very valuable project.

Mr.John Keya,

Thank you very much for taking time and the good advise
given.
We have tried some of the ways that you have suggested.
Where a project proposal is concerned we had not reached
that stage having some assumptions that out there , it
may happen that individuals and organisations could be
willing to donate second hand bicycles, motorcycles and
other items in kind.
We are willing to listen to all any other comments
from you so that we may improve on our strategies for
addressing the needs we have.

Sulaiman,

There needs to be a clear picture of the transport situation in the village before any suggestions can be made. What are the specifics? What is the condition of the roads? What is more or less the average distance the students and teachers have to travel to get to school? What kind of supplies need to be transported to school and from where?

There also needs to be a clear understanding on what approaches have been taken already? What solutions have the community (teachers , parents, staff, students) come up with? What does the local NGO supporting the school think? Has the community tried anything yet?

On the average,Students and Teachers travel between 5 to 7 kilometres to and from the school and this affects the smooth running of the school programs.
The supplies which need to be transported on a regular basis:
- Food for students and teachers(maize-flour,beans,sugar,cooking oil, cassava, sweet potatoes,rice.groundnuts...) from Kibibi and Mpigi Trading Centres some 10 to 25 kilometres away.
- Firewood and water for the school. The school is located in the rural area where there is shortage
of firewood and water becomes very scarce in the dry season. These items are transported from the neighbouring villages.
- Othe items to be transported are:-
Cement,sand,lime,timbber,iron-bars,windows,doors and other materials for construction.
- Furniture for the school.
- School Equipments and stationery.
- With transport, the school administration can facilitate the transport of Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff on school programs. It can also facilitate study-tours for students, sports, as well as for any
emergency case that requires response say taking patients to a nearby Gombe Hospital.

An obvious solution is to rent suitable vehicles for specific needs. You need not depend on the same vehicle to transport children as well as timber, cement, furniture etc.

For most goods, you could negotiate with the suppliers for delivery at destination, after negotiating the delivery charges. If the suppliers refuse, you will need to hire a suitable vehicle to transport the goods.

The vehicle to transport children needs to be of a suitable seating capacity, which is commensurate with the number of children to be transported. This again can be rented. You could opt for a number of smaller vehicles, and negotiate with the supplier for lowest charges. For shorter distances you could arrange a bicycle-trailer arrangement which can be pulled by a person, and can safely seat 4-8 children. I have seen some posts in some village on nabuur describing this arrangement.

Buying a suitable vehicle can be done later when enough monetary reserves have been created through self-sustenance and further income-generation. Efforts can continue for donations also, but this might only delay the whole process.

Hi,

For the vehicle, you'll need money. You should look for sponsers that really can support you with the all the cost. And separate the transport between the teachers&students, food&water and cements/sand etc. Than rent 4 or 5 vehicles, one or two for the students&teacher, one for the food and water, another for the cements and sand etc and in case one vehicle for emergency. Its important that you buy more canned food. In the dry season transport more water for reserve.
