Brainstorm options for income-generating activities for the Community Ouside of School

The families at the Bukoggolwa Village are very poor. Single mothers or elderly adults take care of many children at a time, all due to the high mortality rate in adults caused by HIV.

These mothers and elderly adults barely afford to sustain these children. Extra income for tuition is out of the question.

We are looking on researching and discussing activities that these families could depend on for their own sustainability.

The primary focus must be on food security. No other activity can be successfully attempted without self-sustenance in food.

If the members have land, they must do farming till they achieve self-sustenance in food.

If the members do not have land, they must involve in activities where they can earn enough to achieve self-sustenance in food.

Farming does not need money - it needs work.

Hence farming can be started on the available land without further delay.

If own land is not available, it can be leased or rented from the owners, or farmed on a profit-sharing basis.

If land for farming is still not available, focus on activities where enough can be earned to achieve self-sustenance in food.

Further earnings, or creation of infrastructure like improved houses, schools, transport etc must be thought of 'only after' achieving self-sustenance in food.

Attempting any other activity without first achieving self-sustenance in food is like making a tall building without first making it's foundation.

Self-sustenance in food is the foundation on which all other needs are to be built.

Thank you Vijai for this very helpful post.

Sulaiman, could you please tell us more about the community's life style. What sort of activities do they do to obtain food. Are they farmers? What kind of crops do they grow? Are they hunters?? Please tell us all you can ASAP.

Generally, the inhabitants of Bukoggolwa Village are mainly subsistence organic farmers with a few do farming for home consumption as well as targeting the local markets. The crops mainly grown are beans,
groundnuts,maize,apple bananas,avacado,pineapples,cassava,sweet potatoes,coffee,sugar-canes,hot-pepper,
cabages,onions,tomatoes.
They are also others dealing in livestock and the majority deal in goat, sheep and cattle rearing.
Some deal in poultry farming with the local breeds. They have shown great interest to engage in exotic
breeds for higher yields.
Others are involved in handcraft making and petty trading. It must be pointed out they produce alot of
craft works but most of the time fail to get good prices and reasonable market for them.
The issue of reliable market is a major challenge to them.
Other people engage in construction work but they move to other areas particularly where urbanisation
has taken place for wages.

Thank you for that.

Sulaiman.

Dear Sir,

This is quite important. What I have to say is that the Members of
the village and surrounding communities have alot to offer for market
in terms of crafts. Most of the time, they are limited to better prices.
The crafts which penetrate better market in Kampala again overstay and
this creates uncertainties and frustrations.

Iam soon going to send you pictures of some of the products for more
details so that we can jointly work out modalities for better market
and incentives to produce more from Bukoggolwa Village.

Thank you for this serious concern.
