The water situation in Busukuma needs drastic improvement. Right now, water only flows during the rainy season, but not during the dry season. In addition, children often drink from and urinate in the water supply, and animals (both wild and domesticated) drink from it, carrying an organism called verde which infects the local population. We need neighbours to help us reconstruct the bore hole in the pump, possibly the pump itself, and dig more and deeper ditches so the water can flow during the dry season as well. An expert told us it might cost $1450 to do this work. One of the questions we need to ask is, should we charge the villagers a small fee for these improvements? Your help and advice is greatly appreciated!

Basketball is starting to rival soccer as the world's favorite sport (especially for tall people). We would like to introduce men's and women's basketball to our village of Busukuma, hopefully as part of a nationwide effort in Uganda. When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in St. Kitts, I helped introduce basketball to the rural areas (I couldn't play very well, though) and now there is an outdoor court in many villages on the island. Basketball stresses teamwork and builds character, and women's teams are now at most colleges in the U.S. as well as a women's professional league alongside the NBA. Tasks for this project will follow soon, as well as other important projects for Busukuma. Any interested neighbours, please come on board. Frank and I are eager to get this village started again!!!

Busukuma community members recently met to discuss their ideas for reducing poverty in their community. They all agreed that improved food security and an increase in farm income was likely with the introduction of improved agricultural techniques.
