The two young ladies who were to present their report on Malaria in Busukuma stood up and looked into the lecture room. The room was full with chatting students who had already attended a number of lectures. Nobody stopped talking until suddenly, the buzzing sound of a mosquito made everybody silent. “What is this?” asked the student behind me to his neighbour. While the students in the lecture room were still wondering what was happening, the two ladies in front clapped their hands as if they killed the mosquito and the sound stopped.
This was the sparkling beginning of the presentation Fighting Malaria: Action plan for malaria prevention and treatment in Busukuma, Uganda. I still wonder how they timed the clapping in their hands, because it was crucial for the effect. Nevertheless, the two ladies managed to gain the attention of the students in the lecture room.
The rest of the presentation was just as interesting. The action plan they presented was the result of 16 weeks of team work by six students from different scientific backgrounds at Wageningen University: Bianca Dekker, Charlotte van der Tak, Judith Sitters, Maaike van Agtmaal, Mariette Kooper and Rouyanne Ras. During the first weeks, they studied the disease malaria and common malaria prevention methods. Later, they interviewed Frank Kaaya, the local representative of the village of Busukuma, over the internet (MSN, Skype and e-mail) on several occasions. It appeared that the distribution of insecticide treated mosquito nets and the dissemination of malaria prevention methods at household level are the most effective ways to fight malaria in Busukuma. As a result of their analysis and regular contact with the local representative, the final action plan was well adapted to the local situation and the current actions of the local community.
The action plan presents a lot of inspiration for bringing this project to a successful end. I’ll soon discuss it with Frank Kaaya in order to plan this project. I’ll keep you posted!

Dear neighbours,
I've been a facilitator of Busukuma as part of my job as Online Community Manager for NABUUR.COM.
Unfortunately, I have to leave the NABUUR Foundation as a result of its financial situation. That means that I also stop as a facilitator.
It was great working with you! We have reached some great results: there is a detailed report and action plan describing the local needs and what needs to be done to meet these needs. Last but not least, the people of Busukuma have learnt that people from other parts of the world care about them.
Thanks for the great time! I wish the people from Busukuma and the neighbours all the best in bringing this project to a successful end.
A new facilitator has not yet been found, but I trust that there will soon be a new candidate.
Warmest regards,
Pim Kantebeen

Hi Everyone,
Not sure where this would fit so I thought I would put it here. I have found some very useful resources. The first is a document on running a ITN program with great info on project design, evaluation and so forth as well as a very good section on procuring nets. It has images of the different types and things to consider. It also talks about the various materials used, which may be helpful if trying to make them locally.
The second in instruction on use and treatment of nets. We have seen part of this document before, but this is the entire one.
The third are specifications for netting materials. This too may be helpful if wanting to produce locally.
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know that Hesperian Organization will be sending some books to Busukuma. They will be sending a copy of 'Where there is No Doctor,' 'Sanitation and Cleanliness' and 'Water for Life.' They are being sent out at the end of March by surface mail, so may take a while to arrive from the US.
Regards,
Barb
That is excellent news.
I also got an email from Frank saying he will reply to the questions about the malaria on Friday. I am collecting the info. Once I have that info on statistics and training methods together with the feedback on the cards I would be able to go ahead with the next stage. I wish it took less time but I understand it takes some time for some of the Local representatives to be online more often.
Look forward to the responses anyhow.
Raul

Dear Colleagues
It is good that you have been able to obtain bednets ... or is it mosquito curtains ... for use against malaria in Busukuma. I hope they will work, and help to reduce the burden of malaria in your community.
My study of malaria control over the past few years suggests that bednets will help the persons using the bednets ... but do almost nothing for everyone else in the community. This is better than nothing, but not a full solution by any means.
There are about 10 different things that should be going on at the same time in order to have a sustainable successful program ... exactly what you need to do depending on the actual situation in the village.
I am happy to advise ... to the extent that I am able ... and help the community to help itself. How bad is malaria in Busukuma? Is it year round, or just during the few months of the rainy season? What sort of health clinic do you have ... if any? How far is it? What staff does it have? Where can you get anti-malarial drugs? What sorts of drugs are on sale ... being prescribed? How much is being charged? Any tests for malaria being done? Any data about the mosquito population? About breeding places? Any efforts to control the mosquitoes? Larvacidng? Adulticiding? Is there any interior residual spraying (IRS)? If so what chemical is being used? How frequent the spraying? Do you use DDT for IRS? Lots of questions ... all important to get a sustainable program for your community!
Sincerely
Peter Burgess
