Here is the pictoral guide on how to treat nets. It was provided by a neighbour of Kabondo.

We are having a discussion in Kabondo related to bed kits, which includes mosquito nets. Neighbours have provided lots of links and useful information. Frank, please take a look and see if there is any info there that you can use.

Hi Frank,

I don't know exactly what would be required or if there are patterns available (or even if necessary). Treating them would be important, so refer to attached guide in previous post.

I would assume you would need the following

-netting (fine weave mesh that a mosquito cannot get through)
-needle and thread (depending on how big want to make them and shape??) - would need to be careful when sewing so to avoid making in holes
-depending style, some type of frame to keep the net up. Could use a hoop and string at the top if being hung above. If want free-standing, that would be far more complicated, but if a frame was built (branches, wood, plastic??) the netting could be attached so that a child could sleep underneath.

That's about all I can think of. Anyone else have suggestions? Is it even worth making your own or better to find pre-made?

Hi again Frank,

to answer some questions about VIP materials. Raul has been in contact with someone from VIP and they will be providing a list of requirements. They would then analyze the needs of the village and see if existing materials would meet those needs. Then would move from there. I don't think nets would be included.

Hello Barb,

Many thanks for your message and those great news that you are in a possession of that kind of papers. They will be very helpful for me and Frank. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Regarding your question on our priority now is to find a company or organisation willing to cooperate with us and support us on the matter.

However, to be honest with you, some other activities put in the plan you saw, should be done in a parallel way.

Hi,

I have sent out a few emails to some businesses that manufacture/sell mosquito nets. The businesses are below:

http://www.mosquitocurtains.com/
http://klamboe.eu/webstore/index.php?main_page=index&zenid=0731391580e02...
http://www.web-connections.com/7th-heaven/index_e.html

I will await their reply.

In the meantime, maybe we can look at local manufacturers of netting? Maybe someone can look into this? In some countries, textile manufacturers often manufacture the netting as well. If it could be procured locally, and treated locally, this would greatly decrease costs.

Regards,

Barb

The information that was required for the designers and the organisers of the VIP project has been sent and now we just need to wait to see if they can confirm they have the funds to print out the materials.

Will keep you updated,

Raul

Hi,

One of the companies I contacted, Mosquito Curtains, based in the USA, is willing to donate netting. Basically, when they manufacture their product, they end up with usable remnant pieces. Once they accumulate a number of pieces, they will donate them to Busukuma. In the past, they have sent these to an orphanage in Liberia, but they are not needing much more.

This would be bulk netting in need of sewing. He recommended sewing the pieces together and fastening (if possible) to the windows and doors and other areas that the mosquitos may get into tho home, as this helps the entire family. However, it is possible to just erect bed nets using sticks, poles and other materials to prop them up (over the house or over the bed).

Once he has accumulated a number of pieces, many which are quite large (usually around 300 pounds of weight), then he will contact us to arrange the donation.

However, as his is a small, family-run business, he cannot ship them to Uganda. The next task here would be to find a way to ship the items to Uganda from the US. Some possible options include finding individuals travelling to Uganda, to carry them in their luggage; finding a charity/NGO that would send them to Busukuma; raising the funds;

There would also be a need to look into the various laws and regulations and duty/tax that may be involved with shipping. Some countries have strict rules about donated goods and the cost of duty can be more than the value of the items. We would need to look into these regulations and the paperwork that would be required to ship these items.

Any thoughts on this? Can anyone help look into these?

Dear All,

I notice nothing has been written on this thread since 4-4... I would be willing to send out proposals and letters of intent to organizations that prevent, control or treat malaria... Please tell me which orgs you want to contact and I will get started... I have a minor in English in college and some journalistic experience... Maybe if I help you all, you will give a lift to Mgbala Agwa as well!!! I will check this site every so often to see if anyone has written back!

Sincerely,

Phil Costa

Hi Phil!

Good to see you here.

I have contacted a few organizations, but I am not sure about others. We have found a business (see previous post) that is willing to provide the nets, but we need someone to assist with transporting them from the US to Uganda. Could you maybe look into approaching businesses that could assist with this? I believe the company is based in Virginia (will have to verify), and they would be willing to ship within the US (if costs allow). Are there any companies you may be able to convince to sent them, based in New York or elsewhere in the US? I believe there are some companies listed that we may be able to look into.

Dear Barb,

I will look into shipping companies on the web from NYC or even from my hometown, if that's possible!!! Companies that ship to East Africa, that is! I will get back to you tomorrow or Tuesday on this... Thanks!!!

All best,

Phil

Dear Barb,

You could try nyshipping.com , but they are mostly for household items and personal effects... They WILL ship to Uganda... NewYorkFirst.com will deliver any item "to your doorstep" worldwide... They say they provide "the most efficient, least expensive system for 'shopping without borders'"...

Hope this helps!!!
