Naturally available building materials which are abundantly available in the region are to be used. This is how building materials have evolved over time. Trying to create building structures out of materials which are not naturally available in the region will increase the building costs since each input will be at a higher price.

A very crude example is the availability of clay in the soil in the region which is conducive to building structures made of bricks. In areas where there is an abundance of trees, it is more common to find building structures made of timber. In areas where bamboos are in abundance, it is common to see building structures with a high bamboo content.

You could first identify the input material which is abundantly available in your region, and focus on technology for using this material in your region for building structures. If you look around, you will find most structures already made out of this commonly available input from your own region. Techno-economic considerations will not permit you to build structures out of any material which is not abundantly available in your own region.

Building in Adobe exists though they then have to put a roof which is a probem for some as the tinned roofs are expensive and end up leaking. Let me explain abit, inorder to prevent others from considering to use building products that are harmful to the enviroment, we are aiming to teach some methods and also build some of our buildings using sustainable materials. So inorder to build afforable, respectable houses with basic modern fittings like bathroom in house, water yet in a traditional fashion. This way, people will appreciate what they have and build their family homes big enough to accomodate the family rather than 10 people in a 2 room house. I read somewhere that bamboo can be used as pipes too and furniture made of bamboo can grace the living rooms since bamboo is more sustainable a wood. I need more info about Adobe houses with adobe roofs which does away with the iron sheets for roofs. The roofs can either be dome vaults or flat. How to create the domes and how to build the flat roof with no wood or very less wood. Also more info about ceramic houses and earthbag houses. Bamboo - you have heard right, bamboo is a good resource for furniture, and is also used in some regions in house constructions also.

But all this will really help your region only if skilled manpower is available with enough experience in the respective areas. Otherwise it will translate into a waste of available resources if 'reinventing the wheel' is to be attempted in any of the above areas.

I have been disappointed that other villages just say -" why would we plant on land that we use for food???" surely there is land that is NOT being used - that the community can share in taking care of in order to build as school roof for their children!! This is what we all must strive for - the community spirit that helps a village pull together to become self-sufficient. It is exactly how America grew many years ago. When someone married and needed a house - the whole village got together and built one in 3 days!! - the women cooked for the men - and the men built the house and the children carried water back and forth - all worked very hard to make this happen - a simple one room 'little house on the prairie'. We had a very popular TV series about this kind of life - back in the 60's I believe! True, and its sad they claim that they cant grow bamboo. They can use it to mark boundaries of their homes and farms as it acts as a fence. Amazingly, as long as its cut back every couple of years and used for roofing or building it can provide years of constant supply. Besides eg in Uganda schools, plenty was used to cane students, found in the school compound or somewhere near it. Like they say, you can take a horse to the watering place but cant force it to drink. All we can do is share knowledge and it beats me that one cant see the magic of this plant even when pointed out to them.
