Pig farming as an income generating business

Status: Needs urgent help
Time needed:
A week
Step:
1

We need advice on local pig feeds, forage so any ideas are welcome so that we can supplement the maize bran and eventually reduce costs on feed.

This project has just started and we aim to have it up and running in January 2010. we have 5 youths who have already signed up for this project and need your help to make it happen.

We have raised so far the money for the local piglets but have no accomodation and would like to build something permanent to ensure continuity of the project.

Your assistance financial or otherwise will be highly appreciated.

Attached is our project proposal.

Sylvia, have managed to get a number for the National breeding centre but they are too expensive. One piglet of 3 months costs 120,000 Ushs. Our budget was for 60,000 and atleast 5/6 piglets this limits us back to 2/ 3 piglets. Will keep searching and if all fails we will just have to make do. Thanks

While working in a community based income generating project, we did situation assessment about what exact program can be implemented in that community so that they could show adequate interest and enthusiasm for generating incomes. as such we decided to support some families in a specific cluster, to uplift their indigenous practice of raising Pigs. we thought its best to provide small-he and she pigs for 20 families individually. after they have their offspring, again they have to pass the small- he and she pigs to their neighbors and the same condition applies in whole clusters until every families obtain he and she Pigs. After one year, we find this techniques of supporting Pigs not only support them for generating income by selling them, they also find it very rewarding that they supplemented fish farming in the area jointly as well as individually.I think this techniques not only integrate community and people but also support their sustainability.

I imagine that the people in the village need to eat the veggies first!! - and only the rotten ones are given to the pigs. They also need some kind of protein - and I don't know what they are being fed - but I think they can get some of this from restaurants-

Hi,very pleased to say that we have managed to raise funds to buy the 6 Camborough breed pigs. They will be delivered in February. Each costs 60,000Ugsh that is 360,000Ugs for the pigs and 40,000 Ugshs for transport making it 400,000 Ushs.

We appreciate all your input.

You must feed the pigs some protein rich feed. That is grain. They will not grow well if you do not. Forages of very high quality will provide some protein. Vegetables will not. They are mostly water. Actually pigs are meat eaters.

The above is why I discourage the raising of pigs and chickens [except Moscovies] because their source of food is mostly grain which is needed by humans. Goats eat forages and if it is of the highest quality, no grain. Of course, market determined what is grown.

You are right Ken, how about feeding them of maize bran and rice husks or generally grain chaff will this provide some proteins?

Those three things have no protein and are worthless as an animal feed. It will fill their stomacks and has not food value.

Ken, what kind of forages will provide the protein for the pigs.

Grain supplies protein. High quality forages can supply up to 20% of a pig's diet which would include some protein. You must check to see what forages are used in your country. It varies from temperate climate [mine] to tropics. Check with farmers and/or the agriculture department, etc. Land has to be available for forage production. Use organic, no-till in permanent beds for highest yields. Alfalfa is the best but is there varieties for your location is the question. There are some tropical grasses that are good.

Pig farming is a good source of income generation business because they have a low gestation period compared to other animals. Also they produce many piglets at ago.
The best way for them to get proteins is to feed them maize bran mixed with mukene fish

Well, it is a good project and income generating, pigs can feed of green vegetables, banana peels, pineapple peels. And this is ecpecially used in towns whereby maize bran is too expensive. And after using this, you may find that pig management is beneficial for you.
