Transport computers from Nigeria + Germany to Burundi

Status: Finished

We need to transport the computers from Port Harcourt (Nigeria) and Stuttgart (Germany) to Bujumbura.

Any suggestions how we can do this cheaply (or even better gratis) are very welcome.

Also any tips on how to avoid import tax.

Regarding the transport from Nigeria Jean-Claude is currently checking the following: "I have an idea on Contacting Minister of Relation exchange, and Ambassafor of BURUNDI in NIGERIA they can both help. I know an NGO which used that methods."

Regarding the transport from Germany we want to approach Brussels Airlines which are the only European airline with direct flights to Bujumbura.

Your suggestions are very welcome !!!
More ways we try, more likely are we to succeed...

Warmly
Antje

Possibly to speak to a Courier Company operating between Germany and East Africa who might do it for the good relations?

Hello Antje and Jean-Claude,

In most nations, officially recognised (duly registered with the relevant state institutions,i.e.!) charitable organisations, can apply for tax exemptions, as long as the goods concerned aren't meant for commercial purposes.

Perhaps Jean-Claude can find out if the same policy pertains in Burundi: in which case he can adapt the draft below. I do hope you are well, Antje. Ditto Jean-Claude. Stay blessed, both of you - and all of "Team Buterere!"

Warmest regards,

Kofi.

PS Jean-Claude, the draft follows below:

"The Minister,

Ministry of Social Welfare and Manpower Resources,

Bujumbura.

Dear Minister,

We are writing to apply for tax exemption for a number of computers donated to us, from Nigeria and Germany.

They will be used by our organisation, Buterere Development ....,which was set up in ..... and officially registerd with the department of social welfare, in ......

We would be most grateful if we could be given a letter to the customs department, from your ministry, indicating to them, that we have been given permission to clear the computers, on a tax exempt basis.

We thank you in advance and look forward to a positive response from you soon - to enable us clear the computers immediately they arrive in the country.

Yours faithfuly,

Jean-Claude Kamwenubusa

(Chairperson)"

Thank you for your message and draft letter Kofi !!

An Ugandan neighbour has told us that in Uganda computers are generally import tax exempt anyway.

I've asked Jean-Claude to find out the situation in Burundi and, if necessary, prepare that letter to ask for tax exemption.

Warmly
Antje

We're currently contacting all airlines that fly to Bujumbura (there are only four...):

Dear Jean-Claude,

German and Nigerian computers could be transported through Ethiopian Airlines (from Lagos and Brussels):
http://www.ethiopianairlines.com/cargo/cargonetwork.aspx
So please change the English text to include Nigeria and send it to the Cargo e-mail address mentioned in the above link. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any information that Ethiopian Airlines are committed to support charities. But let’s ask anyway.

Exactly the same is also true for Kenya Airways (but Amsterdam instead of Brussels):
http://www.kenya-airways.com/home/kqcargo/default.html (click on global contacts for the e-mail addresses – you could write to their Kenya Headquarters and their Burundi office).

Rwandair doesn’t serve Europe or West-Africa.

Regarding Brussels Airlines you know what needs to be done already.

Warmly
Antje

If anyone knows of (or can research) freight forwarders that (might) serve Burundi, Nigeria and Germany and have a committent to support charities, please let us know.

Also if anyone works at a freight forwarding company or has personal contacts at such a company - please ask on Buterere's behalf whether they'd be ready to transport our computers for free.

Thank you :-)
Antje

Dear all

Thank you for the contributions,

Now locally we made assessment and found that the Computers are not taxed in Burundi. We found that there is not an Embassy of Burundi in NIGIRIA, nor Representative of Burundi in neither NIGERIA nor Nigerian collaborator/Relation exteriors in Burundi. I approached the NGO I told you and it did like this: They had a Burundian lived in Nigeria, they contacted him to ask to come with Computers and they paid only fee of Transportation to Burundi. About the fees. And ASASS-burundi doesn't have any colaborator in NIGERIA, but if we could approach Nabuur to contact one of their LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE and ask to help to get the Computers go out of the NGO which donated them because of new promotion of Job of a donors who agreed this. ( Suggestion from myself after reading news messages of today, not from local team).

Currently team is writing a later to request Exemption for Computers. But we did assessment what are needed to be annexed to our later are: CERTIFICATES OF DONATION and PROFORMA INVOICE OF MATERIALS DONATED from ahead of the Two NGOs which donated us (ASASS-Burundi) Computers ( PORT HARCOURT AND STUTLGART NGOs). If an other one knows other additional needed papers he can inform us.

The Angencies-KENAYA AND BRUSELAIRWAYS have been contacted too.

Thanks a lot

Dear Sushmita Lahiri

Thank you for the correction. I succeed to send a message to them (both).

There I would like to say that I need a help from one of our neighbours volunteers (because I don't know also the exact contact of person we need in the Countries where donated materials are available).

If other know other ways to ship donated Two Computers from German, and two labtops from Nigeria or if know a Burundian or external visitor who is expecting to visit Burundi these day he can inform us, because the PC are vey much needed in our Center.

Thank you

Dear all,

This is a response to the contacted address, but in their response I have not a clear idea for their orientation to ask donors of Labtops to ship them through DHL, will they pay?, may be my understanding is bad???

The response is from www.dpanet.nl/introduction-menu.htm

objet Re: Request assistance for Computer shipment to Burundi-Bujumbura

Dear Sir,

In reply to your request we advise the following:

2 laptops from Nigeria;

I would recommend to ask the donor in Nigeria to ship these directly by DHL or similar parcel courier to your address in Burundi.

4 computers from Stuttgart:

Best solution is your donor in Germany to contact us directly or find his own airfreight expeditor in Stuttgart.
In both cases our involvement would increase cost considerably and unnecessary.

With best regards,
Leo Bom
