Hi Denis,

It's good to see that your project has reached a point where you feel that you are in a position to bring out a year-end report. Congratulations!

In case you feel that the stage of self-sustenance has been crossed, it might be a good idea to bring out a balance sheet indicating the financial performance.

The format of the balance sheet could be whatever is prevailing in your country among business houses, so that it is easy for people at your end to understand and prepare such a document.

It is customary for balance sheets to be released at least every quarter, in addition to annual, by business organizations in most progressive countries.

You will need an accountant for this task, who is familiar with the stipulations applicable to your country.

Thank you Vijai,

We are considering to doing exactly what you have proposed.
However, we also need to hear from you as neighbours of Butikiro about what you feel was missed out in the running of the village. This could be in terms of participation, updates, and general implementation of the activities.

Regards,
Denis Marsha

Hi Marsha,

Good to know that you are working in a business-like manner.

I like to see the big picture first - the macro-view. This is provided by the balance sheet. The rest of the report could be referred to in general, or in case something specific in the balance sheet is to be examined. For business purposes, the annual report, without the balance sheet, is meaningless.

Marsha, as you are aware, I do not get caught in the day-to-day issues anywhere. I am certain that you can get the feedback that you desire from the other active neighbours at your village.

As far as I am aware, you have conducted the affairs of your village in a professional manner, and I am certain that your village can look forward to some good results in the future.

Cheers

Hi Marsha

I am pleased that you carry out such assessments as they are the key to evaluate progress. How self sustaining are the projects so far? eg the kiyuni, did the farmers save seeds, how much?, if they did have they done the replanting again and how productive were the seeds. If they werent are you considering teaching them how to save seeds? How about requesting the farmers you gave /give seeds to consider returning double the amount at harvest so that you can offer them to other farmers who want to join the project but have no means. This way the project will carry on. Have you got sufficient market for all produce, if not, what was done with the produce that did not sell? eg melons could be turned into wine. I know, it takes long to realise the end product but atleast there is hope not waste. Basically if possible consider training in wine making from the melons too as a joint project for all farmers.

Marsha, about the bee keeping project, have you collected any honey yet? Actually still the same applies to this project as kiyuni. Have you given training for value addition?

Can you try and teach the farmers too on how to make easy hives like topbar and other african / village bee hives to supplement the modern ones they have hence increase income. I believe i have your email so will forward ebook about bee keeping. I like this book as it shows you how you can make alternatives to bee keeping kits.eg suites etc

BTW, looked into the kisubi grass but couldnt find info about the extractor at all. If you find any helpful info pse let me know. see attached docs.

Hi Susanne,

The options as presented below are being and have been considered. The option of seed saving has been subsituted with saving of some amount of money that will be generated from the sell of produce. Through this farmers will be able to buy more improved seeds. Harvesting of produce could start next month.

We shall discuss more of the details about melons to wine initiative when I meet you in Kampala end next week.

Denis Marsha

Joanne, we have not started harvesting honey. The project is still in its infancy though we have achieved about 70 percent target of colonisation. The recent long spells of drought (very hot dry periods) we experience had a negative impact on bees in the area.

Thanks for the search of the beekeeping book; its great and will be used for this project.

in my little homevillage

HELLO
I AM NEW TO NABUUR
i would like contribute even if it will be not in place here

i have some ideas about how manage facilities and resources so that you economize many things in a rural community

1/for exemple to save wood and anu other energy source, recipients must be some centimeters above the flames , where heat is most strong.

2/about canalisations of water : to avoid formation of limestone in pipelines , you place a stopcock on the main pipe , the nearest possible to the source of water (tank or government water supply) and you close it so that all water gets out of home pipelines whan not in use . because lime stone forms by sedimentation inside pipes full of water especially under pression

3/to repair a puncture in a pipe even if it is under pressuree , you can use a rubber band cut in a used inner tube of car or bicycle ( depends on puncture size )
you wrap the rubber band over the hole by pulling and straining and you hold tight using something so that the band does not become loose. and no need to cut or weld or stop the water. can be used with pvc or metallic pipes.

good luck and good new year
