We need a volunteer graphic artist and digital cameras to help develop appropriate IEC materials

Status: In progress
Time needed:
A week
Step:
2

Our village has now identified a parent resource manual for training youths, school children and women's groups in zero waste management. Information in the manual is now being used to prepare a training timetable and session contents for each of the target groups.

However, we have realised that in order for the training to be effective and skills oriented, the following topics ought to be included:
(a) using photographs that depict current practices to carry out a situation analysis and
(b) using illustrations to describe the desired/recommended practices.
(c) using photographs and video shows to show examples of outcomes of implementing desired interventions

At the moment, we have been using a telephone camera to take photographs but these are of poor quality. In addition illustrations that are in the manual (attached) do not reflect local conditions.

We have decided to work with students in schools (both primary and secondary) to produce local illustrations that will be used for community education. We will need a local artist to use selected drawings by students to help develop the illustrations and take videos of selected best practices.

We will therefore need support in the following areas:
(1) about 02 digital cameras to help take photographs with high quality resolution. The cameras will be used by the youth clubs to take photographs of waste scenes in their neghbourhoods to be used for situation analyasis and action planning.

(2) a volunteer graphic artist to help convert selected drawings from the students into electronic illustrations that will be used for dissemination of key messages indicated in the implementation strategy. Additional tasks will include development of flyers, banners and posters.

(3) a digital camera for shooting and developing documentaries

Any ideas and contributions in support of this task are welcome.

Walude

Project: Village talk

Hi Walude,

AA
You could examine if the hardware requirements can be modified to include the following additional items:
- data projector - one
- white screen small/medium size depending on targeted gathering
- computer to store images and videos for projection through the data projector on to the screen (may be already available)

BB
The need for a graphic artist can be eliminated by scanning the images made by the students. These images can be stored in the computer and projected though the data projector on the white screen. Hence better control on the time-frame.

CC
Printing of fliers, banners and posters will all cost money, and can be thought of under cash-rich conditions. Till the cash-rich stage is achieved, all information could be disseminated through the data projector on the white screen. This route will have only the initial expenditure on buying the equipment, but the operating and maintenance expenses will be negligible.

Hi Vijai,

Thank you very much for your timely advice.

I have actually received a digital camera from a well wisher and it appears this will do for now. It also has a provision for capturing short video clips.

From what you have pointed out, we still need a data projector and screen to enable us make classroom shows especially for students in schools. This will also save us a lot of cartridges for color printing. However, for the youth clubs and women at water sources, we will need printed photographs in color to enable them have a hands-on experience in learning and action planning. We already have a color printer and computer for storage of the photographs.

In addition, we have a scanner that will now be used to scan illustrations for storage and re-broadcasting. The scanner also doubles as a photocopier and this will help us to mass produce recommended illustrations on a large scale for distribution to parents and neighbors by pupils, youths and women.

A graphic artist is still needed to produce the banners, posters and flyers and probably improve on the quality of some of the illustrations. As of now we don't have a data projector and screen and we will continue to search for possible opportunities for support.

Walude.

Dear neighbours,

I would like to inform you that we have now identified a local graphic artisit who will help us with enriching the illustrations that will be developed by children for communication of basic messages to the community.

His name is Robert Kayimbye and has been engaged in doing such work before so he is glad to join Bweyogerere team. In his own words he says: "illustrations communicate more information compared to photographs". What is your take on this?

It seems we are moving slowly but steadily towards starting this porject

Cheers

Hi Walude,

That is great that you have found a local graphic artist.

Regarding your question about illustrations versus photographs - being a photographer, I'm a bit biased towards photos :-) However, I think the medium (or media) used to convey your message will depend on what your message is. For example, there are a number of very good posters (which I would be more than happy to provide you with - they are open source and can be modified) related to hygiene. These are done with illustrations to show the process, which is far more effective than photos on a poster. I have seen other posters that use photographs instead, so that people can see something in reality. So, it depends on what you are trying to say and achieve.

Just my thoughts,

Barb

Hi Barb,

Thank you very much for your advice on the issue of photos versus illustrations. Please share with me those posters on hygiene promotion. I realise our local graphic artist needs to learn more about the context of producing the posters.

Cheers

Hi Walude,

All the posters and other materials were created by the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation (CAWST) based in Canada. They are at the following link on Nabuur http://www.nabuur.com/en/group/water-and-sanitation/project/task/general...

Just scroll down and you will find a number of postings made by me with attachments and you should be able to download any that you like. If you have difficulty I can send them directly to you. Some groups have had the posters printed on corn sacks or potato sacks so they last longer. When I visited Uganda last year, I saw some printed on it and they were quite nice. This way they would withstand the weather as well.

Hi Barb,

Thank you very for providing me access to the posters. I have downloaded all of them and realised they will be an important resource for sanitation and hygiene promotion in primary schools of our village. We will use these in the second phase of our project (Water pollution control).

The posters will also help to stimulate the minds of teachers and the local graphic artist on the nature of materials to be produced.

I have also attached guidelines on production of IEC materials and resources which will further guide the team

With all regards

Hi all

The first draft of illustrations for promoting a culture of zero- waste management in Bweyogerere is now out. Simply move your mouse over the illustration and its purpose will show up.

These illustrations will be evaluated at the next review meeting on Thursday. The final version of the illustrations will displayed on the day of launching the waste mop-up week.

Please post comments here if you think there should be areas of improvement.

HULLO SIR. I can take photos using my personal digital camera and then hand in the pictures and videos for this cause. I am so willing and will be delighted to do it.
