Kampala Metropolitan Authority to be established soon
"We need to plan for the provision of services in areas surrounding Kampala because that is where many of the people who reside in the city reside," said Urban Tibamanya, the state minister for Urban Development.
Tibamanya noted that the urbanisation process had been taking place without a policy to determine the location and distribution of urban centres, leading to mushrooming of unplanned trading centres along major communication routes. He also added that this has led to unblalanced urbanisation, where Kamapala city has expanded at the expense of its sister towns in the neighbourhood.
Tibamanya said this while openning a retreat on urban development and the national development plan in Kampala. (See story by Anthony Bugembe, The New vision, Thursday, May 14, 2009).
NICRAD intends to work very closely with the metropolitan authority to ensure that the Urban policy and its support programs are implemented by youths in Bweyogerere township and other community-based organisations working in urban centres within the three districts.
