Help Secure Playground Equipment and Educational Games

Status: Just started
Step:

The children at Gamauli school range in age from 7-12 years of age. They have received one donation of a few items that can be utilized on their playground, but with increased enrollment at the school they could use more. Another great option for the students would be educational games that teachers could use in the classroom. These games might focus on topics such as improving environmental awareness, social understanding, improving health/hygiene, water sanitation, geography, etc. Keep in mind there is no power at the school, so we are looking for things that do not require electricity to be functional.

For this task we are asking that volunteers help us research ways to secure these types of materials and get them to the teachers and children in Gamauli. What organizations are out there that might be willing to help? Please post your thoughts and ideas here.

I found this article tonight about Early Childhood Education. It contains some ideas about different things that can be done to encourage learning through play. I thought it might be useful as a thought starter to help generate ideas for this task.

I found some website links that could be useful. Most of the websites contain educational activities to teach the children the content while still having fun. Also they are quite easy to understand and is very cost efficient. Hope this helps!

Hi Sindujah-

Thank you so much for your ideas. We will be sure to look them over and share with the teachers. They do not have Internet access at the school or electricity, so Min would need to share the ideas with them. We appreciate your efforts on behalf of the school. Keep your ideas coming :)

Merry Christmas-

I talked with Min this morning about approaching this task as our 2009 Project for the school (like the winter clothes we raised funds for in 2008). Looking back at that experience, I think we started to prepare too late and it really did not give us much time to work. Min agreed that it would be best to start making plans now about how to approach this.

The hope is that by winter 2009, the water project will be complete, the new toilets constructed and if all goes well, the 2 classroom addition will be completed (or at least started). I asked Min what types of things might be useful for the children at the school. He mentioned things like the following:

1. Art Supplies (pens, paper, colored markers, crayons)
2. Badminton Set
3. Footballs
4. Rope for jump roping
5. Balls

We also talked about games appropriate for ages 7-12 years and educational aids such as flashcards, spelling cards, alphabet cards, math flashcards, etc. Some of these things could possibly be made by the older students as well for use with the younger classes if they had the supplies available to do it.

Do any of you have ideas for how we might approach this as our 2009 Project to support the school? Have experience in conducting a toy drive? Let us know your thoughts.

Keep in mind that shipping/travel expenses always need to be kept in mind if donations are collected for the school and shipped so we need to work these costs in to whatever we do.

Looking forward to your ideas-

Jennifer

Min-

Mary just sent me this link to Arvin Gupta Toys. The website is filled with different ideas for things that can be made from everyday objects and used for learning different things. Check it out and see what you think, it's very interesting!

Dear Jennifer

Thanks for your great contribution tireless work. I tried to visit that link and felt that it is very useful however i do not able to visit the whole website. I think the list of books is very useful. At the same time, I would like to request to all volunteers and donars, The shiping cost and transportation cost is very high than the cost of the materials. Since it is better to collect some English books and send to ECC but the remining things are better to buy in Nepal. At same time, if we get any company for free shipping the first one idea is very good or the colection is different country and sending here is useful because the children get original goods.

Sincerely your's
