Help Secure Story Books, Reference Books and Teaching Materials for the School

Status: Just started
Step:
3

Students at the school do not have access to a library. Teachers are provided with "Teacher's Guides" and students are provided with text books, but they have very limited access to other types of fun reading materials and reference books. Ideally these books will be written in Nepali, but other books appropriate for students in grades 1-5 (ages 7-12) would be welcome. Room to Read has provided a donation already and some additional resources were provided by a volunteer a few years ago. Other than this, no other donations have been received to date.

Min is also interested in establishing an English reading library at the school, but it will be helpful to have the addition built at the school so there is sufficient space available.

In the present classrooms, there are desks and a blackboard. Other than this, there are no charts, maps, or other learning materials. Keep in mind there is also no power at the existing school so e-books or computer-based resources will not work.

For this task we are asking volunteers to research possible resources that we can contact for assistance in obtaining additional books and teaching materials for use at the school and others who are willing to help us make contact with the agencies identified.

Min-this may be a good organization to contact about obtaining more books for the children at the school.

Room to Read may be another good organization to contact about books for the school or an English reading library.

Read Nepal is another great organization that may be useful in obtaining further books for the students to use in the classroom, or toward your idea of establishing an English Reading Library.

Tejanath, the LR in the Khandbari village, found much success for the Himalaya Secondary Primary School, by contacting book distributers and publishers in Kathmandu. Since you are located there, it may be a good thing for you to think about as well for Krishna Primary School. He was able to secure 3,000 books for the school library. Among those who donated where Ratna Book Distributers and M.K. Publishers.

Tejanath may be able to provide you with good suggestions about how he approached these companies and his request. Of course, we need to keep transportation costs in mind as well, but wanted to mention this to you.

I had some success contacting them many months ago for the Khandbari village. They offered to have Tejanath come to pick out books needed for the school, but unfortunately he was not able to get to Kathmandu at that time. Again, transportation may present an issue for you as well due to the distance from Kathmandu to Gamauli, but I still felt this was worth mentioning. They were very kind and timely in their communication with me.

Here is a list of several other resources we collected in the Khandbari village in association with getting books for the school library. Again, with most of these, transportation costs will likely be the most prohibitive factor. I still believe 100% that you will find the most success if you focus primarily on the organizations working inside Nepal already, including publishing and book distribution houses.

Hello,

I came across this organization: Global Education Fund. They are experienced in establishing libraries but also in providing textbooks and teacher-training workshops.
http://www.globaleducationfund.org/

I was thinking to ask them for more information and what the requirements are to (maybe) become involved with our project. What do you think?

Hi Jenny

On behalf of Gamauli people, here I would like to extend my grateful to your great step for us. It is really good for us. Please be sure and make clear that what do we need to do for that opportunity. Jennifer and we have decided for library and books also.

Please do not forget that Education Concern Center (ECC) is working with that school and we can go through ECC. Here ECC is a nongovernment and non profit organization. Please visit www.educationconcerncenter.org for details and help to improve this website also.

Thanks
Min/LR Gamauli

Hi Min,

I am sorry, I do not have the whole project structured in my head yet I think. So please help me understand it: if there is an organization that might be of help to our project I have to tell you and you will proceed it through ECC? Is that correct?

Regards,
Jenny

Hi Jenny-

That organization sounds like a perfect fit for ECC and this project. I believe that Min is asking you to contact them and find out what their requirements are. I looked over the website briefly this evening and it looks like they set up partnerships with other schools?

Any information you can find out and relay here would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

I found the VFN on internet. They are located in Pokhara, Nepal.

They organize volunteer programs for educational development at primary schools in Nepal.

They work with enrichment centres, these are "places where young children can come and learn in a play-environment." They also provide educational materials etc.

Please check out the site: http://www.volunteerfornepal.org/objectives.htm

I already contacted the founder of the organization, René Voss, to check if they cooperate with projects like ours. And I received a positive answer back from them.

Please let me know if I can go on talking with VFN to find ways to cooperate with Shree Krishna School.

Dear Jenny and Jennifer

I am very glad that I met TWO "J" mean- Jennifer and Jenny. and I am very enouraged we will get success.

Thanks for you great contribution. I vivited that website. I may be wrong that I found it is atype of exploitation of volunteers. why do volunteers pay that huge amount even they are coming to support to the community children.
Please visit ECC website we have developed and practicing the volunteer program with triangular partnership. It mean ECC manage every thing here in Kathamandu and manage placement in schools and ECC partner schools provide free food and room for volunteers. ECC also manage some exposure visits to volunteers. In spite of this volunteers pay $150 as a hosting fee and minimum payments during their living in Kathmandu. They can support stationary and other materials to the school. Hence it is more faithfull and depended on cost sharing. ECC do not charge any more.

I cannot tolerate such types of economic exploitation. Since Volunteer for Nepal and me as ECC cannot work together.

Please, think about ECC and it's volunteer program.

Best of all

Dear Jennifer

I surprised with your work. How much work that you can do ina day. I found many things in website that you posted. Hard working!

Certainly, I will follow your suggestions and I will visit these websites. Room to read has already provided some books. Please do not worry in this issue because we can collect books both in English and Nepali. Last day I talked with Anjana and Khushbu also. We can collect her in Kathmandu. We are trying to collect free of cost and we will ask to private schools.

Sincerely your's
