Krishna Primary School Water Project

The students at the school in Gamauli presently have no access to clean drinking water while at school. It causes many of them to leave after a few hours in the classroom.
During Min's recent visit to the school, he met with a merchant in the local market and discussed piping water from the market to the school. The cost estimates are attached.
We are asking volunteers with experience in engineering to look over the proposal and make any suggestions or ask any questions that the proposal may bring to mind. We do have a possible donor to help fund the completion of the project.

I came across this very interesting video in a blog tonight and wanted to share it with you. The website for the company who created this is located here: www.playpumps.org. Basically, they construct a water well and a merry-go-round that children play on pumps the water. Quite an innovative idea! :) Right now it looks like they just work in Africa, but you never know when something like this might expand.
Dear Jennifer
Thanks for your great job.
It may be really useful to our context and may be innovative idea to other schools in Nepal.
Sincerely your's

This organization is currently working in Nepal according to their website-
http://www.wateraid.org/usa/what_we_do/where_we_work/nepal/default.asp
Their website also says that they accept technical inquiries which are handled by engineering specialists in the UK. I will try to contact them and see if we get anywhere.

This is a nice article that explains the rooftop water harvesting method:

Again, not sure if this would be a good option for the school, but again I felt it was worth posting to learn more about the option.
Jennifer
Hi,
Check out the Nabuur group on water and sanitation. There are a number of resources there related to drinking water including biosand filters. There are entire manuals on how to build them (which by the way can become a business opportunity).

Dear Barb and Jennifer
The above alternates are appropriate for the school. Pls tell me if anything that i need to do and I suggest to focus any one project for their attention.

During Min's recent visit to Krishna Primary School, he was able to visit with the owners of a local market not far from the school. The plans they discussed involved piping water from the market into a concrete tank (yet to be constructed) at the school. This would be an above ground tank and contain a spicket so the water in the tank could be easily accessed by the students.
Min has told me he has drawn up a cost estimate for this project and we have someone who is interested in donating toward this as well.
Attached is a picture which I cropped and added a tag to so that you can see where the market is in association with the school. It is located in the top left corner.
this is a good idea and will work ,also i look the website given to you are also working the only way is to write the proposal
Min has talked with the local VDC (I believe Village Development Committee) about the need for water at the school. They have agreed to contribute $100 USD toward the project. We also have a donor willing to donate around $700 USD toward the project budget. This leaves only around $300 left to raise to complete the project according to Min's original budget estimates. He's been very busy meeting with local NGO's and other International Aid organizations and doing a great job gaining local support.
Thought you would all want to know the good news :)
Jennifer
Min is still hard at work raising funds locally so that the water project can be completed. I talked with him briefly this morning and he told me that he's raised all but $50 and hopes to have that secured tomorrow, so all appears to be going very well. Looks like Krishna Primary School will have access to clean water in 2009! :)
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer and Min Dai,
I think we can contact Water Aid office at Kupondole, they might be able to provide some help, It is also near to where Min dai stays so you cna give it a try there as well

Anjana
Hi Anjana-
Thank you for the suggestion! I am happy to report that Min was able to secure all of the funding needed yesterday so things are still on target for completion of the water project.
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer and Sister Anjana
Thanks Anjana ji for your kind suggestion and sincere concern to Gamauli project. Now we are able to raise fund for water project. We will complete it within one month probably. Anjana sis. if you have any approaches pls work for toilet project and her ECC is comitted to share cement for the toilet projrct in that school and the rest of the project part will be shared by another organizationa nd community. ECC needs about $500.00 for toilet program which is going to start very soon and being late due to the part of ECC.
Dear Jennifer
I visited website and became very happy that you have updated the recent news. Please don't worry for toilet and water project because we can start water project when Mr. Garry sends his collection and I am approaching to all possibilities for the tolet project. Hopefully I will get support even in part like, $100.00 and others.
Since I request to you to focus on Bulding project. At the same time I would like to request to all neighbours for their kind help for the building project. If they all collect even in samll amount we will get success near future.
Sincerely your'smin/LR
Min-
You'll remember back in November, we posted about the water project to the EngineerAid forum. Basically, I asked for input regarding the plan to get water to the school. This morning, Romina pointed out that we had received two responses from engineers with questions about the project. I was able to log in and upload the proposed plan for routing the water to the school, as well as a picture showing where the market is located in relation to the school.
Unfortunately, in their forum there is no notification when there are new messages, so I will keep checking it for further responses and if they point out anything in particular that may need addressed or may be of concern, I will let you know right away.
Best wishes-
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer
Do they work only for water projects or other construction?
