Scholarship to students from underprivillaged comunity

Status: Just started

Drop out, leaving school after mid day break and uneffective teaching learning in school are major problem in our community school. Mostly girls and students from underprivellaged group drop out every year.

Since I am working on scholarship program for those students. Here I am planning and I distributed scholarship for 9 students this year. I did not distributed money but I supported, uniform, books, stationary, registration fees and other supports. I do not suport stationary at a time but I support after each three months. And I am trying to provide tiffin to all students. Now it is possible by Mr. Garry Miller (An Australian citizen and donor from 3 years ago)

USD 70.00/child can cover all these expenses and the program can run effectively. This amount will be enough to run Friday celebration program and scholarship to students.

Since, every neighbours are requested to find a sponcer for a child. Here "ONE FOR ONE" concept will be meaningful and easy. A sponcer can support USD 70.00 for the whole year. and if we get 100 persons like this then our project can run effectively.

Every one, think about it and suggest me and then help to find sponcers.

Kind regards

Min-

Can you please clarify? Above, you indicate that you are seeking sponsorship in the amount of $70 USD per student and that you are seeking 100 sponsors. I assume this means that you want to expand your ability to provide assistance to the students at Krishna Primary School with the most need.

As I understand it, for $70 you intend to supply scholarship recipients with a school uniform, books, stationary, pay registration fees and purchase a tiffin box for each student. Is that correct?

Have you defined what sponsors can expect in return? Are you planning to identify students in need ahead of time, or are you looking for more of a 1-time donation that ECC will distribute to the students with the most need? Most sponsors may expect something in return, such as a letter from the child they are sponsoring, for their sponsorship unless the program parameters are clearly defined.

How do you plan to let others know about this program? How would interested sponsors go about transferring money?

Sponsorship programs can be very complicated to manage. How will you keep track of when a sponsorship stops/starts for example?

You may want to speak with Tejanath about how the Sankhuwasabha Education Scholarship Foundation runs their program. I am sure that he can provide you with good advice.

Kind regards-

Jennifer

Dear Jennifer

Your write-up is a great lesson for me.

First I would like to clirify about tiffin. It mean tiffin program in every Friday and every children enjoy tiffin and it will be prepared in school with local products. I do not provide tiffin box to students. If we are able to provide tiffin even once in a week then students will stay school for whole day and it will be a strong attraction for those needy students. There will be 35 Friday in a year that teacher can conduct Friday program and they can porvide tiffin to students. There will be strong connection between Scholarship and tiffin program that students will be more attached with school. With this $70 amount, $40 will be spent for scholarship support and $30 will be spent for tiffin. But it will be analysed later.

Next, ECC will manage it as a package program with photo, annual results/progress reports, correspondance with sponcers, sharing photos, and writing letter and arrange visit if any sponcer or tbeir friends come to Nepal.

Yes you are right, we get problem when any sponcer stopt thei support. But ECC will start to raise fund to continue sholarship to these students. The fund will be generated at local level also and possibly start a incom generation porgram involving their parents. I am trying to way out differently.

Regular reporting system will be managed by ECC and school principal.

The beginning of scholarship program with 100 sponcers will help to start resurve fund for coming year that local resources can be added.

I am developing detail plan and I will send to you later.

I will also contact to tejnath and make beautiful to this program.

Best Regards

Dear min Bahadur Shahi.

I was happy to know that you are developing an individual sponsorship program for the poorest children in your village.

Do the children go to the private boarding school or the government school?

If the children go to the government school, English is very weak there. So they will not be able to write a letter to their sponsors even after passing the SLc exam. So the donors may lose interest and and may stop their sponsorship at any time thinking that their god child is not progressing in education

The sponsors are pleased to read letters written by their sponsored children from time to time

So the sponsors like to sponsor a poorest to go to a private boarding school.

Thank you for your input Tejanath!

I think it would be great if you and Min could talk about the scholarship program and you could explain how the SESF program is set up. The Education Concern Center may be able to benefit from some of the work we did in the Khandbari village to support the program-possibly making a brochure or newsletter for their program following your example.

Min was in Gamauli distributing the sweaters and scarves we had made for the school children there. I believe he's on his way back to Kathmandu now and will arrive early next week.

Thanks again for your input and support!

Dear Tejanath

Thanks for your sincere idea which is in our practice and we used to follow it which others do.

But now we need to focus on government schools because about 7 million sutudents are there and it is cheaper then sponcer can support for kids.

In this purpose we need to improve the English language in givernemnt school by providing English library and creating englisg language environment. About 31 gov. schools have started as english medium and they also have started grade teaching in their schools.

If the child is in private school then a sponcer need to pay about $300.00 in cheapest schools but $70.00 will be sufficient in government school and it covers all kinds of expenditure for a kid even tiffin for every Friday. It is very effective program and it is replicable in other parts of the country. We can replace vacant quotas by local sponcer in later days.

In case of letter writing by studetns, I think they can do and we are going to creat environment by establishing library and providing traning to teachers. Teachers are going start English medium by next academic year.

So I am hoipeful that this project will be success and will be replicable in other schools.

I will share the details of concept note later.

Thanks again for sharing ideas and making us alert

Dear Jennifer

I will be in Kathmandu tomorrow. Today, I am in Surkhet - on the way.

It is nice to hear from Tejanath and other neighbours. I think, the scholarship program will be unique and replicable in other schools not only in Nepal even in other countries. I am thinking about mobilization of local resources and attracting local sponcers that the project can go longer.

I always thinks about the medium in govenrment school or we need to improve the English language in go. schools and need to develop onwership by local stakeholders. Then the education can be complete in Nepal and every child can get education in their own home vollage which is quality educaiton.

dear Min

I was happy to know your good idea about the individual sponsorship program in the cheap price.

I hope it will be successful.

The most important thing is the children should know how to communicate in English so that the program is sustainable and the sponsors continue sending the money for the children.

Dear min
I have also some experience it this field. No we have 10 children being spoored by different individuals from different countries. A part from a dalit girl all go to private boarding. They Can communicate in English. so the sponsors are satisfied. but it has been very difficult for me to continue the dalit girls sponsorship. She is very weak in English.

Our sponsors have been sending $200.00 per year for school fees, school dress, school stationery etc.
