Find and contact organisations that donate books

Through the efforts of many Neighbours over the past 18 months Garden Library has received many donated books! The library has the capacity to hold over 4000 books however right now the library holds 500 books. We have empty shelves! The Library needs more books!
Volunteers are needed to keep searching for organisations that can help with donating books. A document- LIST OF DONOR BOOKS appears in the Resources section for a list of organisations to follow up. We need books for young children from 5 years of age up to young adults of 22-24 years of age. General reading books and some useful, current text books are great too. English language books are required.

Hello everybody,
Gerdie just sent me a file of an organization that donates books. We now have several sources to get books from and they need to be contacted. This task is still vacant for a task owner.
Check out "resources" to the right.
Greetings
Biblionef donates books and are in Zambia. This is an application form
This is a list of a variety of organizations that donate books. Unesco is one of them.

Hello TJ
I went through the application form Gerdie sent you.
Do you want me to complete it or do we let Mary handle it since she is the one handling these issues and she already has information as regards such applications?
Mary think you very much for the applications you have made so far.Have you had any new feedback?
Mulenga
Hi, Mulenga
The www.big-books.org is preparing a shipment of books baed on our application/request form, but we'll have to come up with the shipping costs. Has their been any promising news from the Rotary Club?
The Books for Africa organization ships books only in very large quantities.
I have not heard back from the remaining org's that I have emailed. I will continue down my list and send emails to another 4-5 organizations.
Regards,
Mary
Hi Mary,
Thank you very much for the news.TJ will be getting in touch with us as regards the Rotary issue.
I am just keeping my fingers crossed as we have now started working on the room to be converted into the Library.
Mulenga
hi Mary, If you want me to help with any of the organisations let me know Sinéad
Hi Mary,
Great work you are doing, thanks!
I would like to know if you managed to contact Biblionef in the Netherlands? Just because we might have contacts for a transport soon. Nothing sure yet, but since transport seems to be the biggest obstacle, it could be a good start.
Furthermore, any idea where the big books are shipped from and what they will charge?
Warm regards,
Gerdie
Hi Gertie,
The Big Books group ships from Annapolis, Maryland in the US. They have us listed on their "current shipments" page - hopefully some philanthropic good heart will come along and provide some of the funding!

I have not contacted the Netherlands group you mention.

Mary
p.s.
Sinead, did you get the list of contacts I emailed to you?
Hi everyone,
Mary, I got the list of organisations and I will start contacting them straight away,
Gertie,I will contact the Dutch organisation but there is still some questions for Mulenga,
Mulenga, what is the ratio of boys and girls at the centre, I see from all your information that there are more women in Garden itself is it the same in the centre
Also I think I have your address right- Yofoso centre, G22, Garden, Lusaka, Zambia. do you have a phone number? it is not important if you don't
Sinéad
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for the great work that you are doing.
Yes even at the centre the number of Girls is higher than that of boys. The children do not stay at the centre but do come from homes within the community. We now have 38 regular children of with 23 are girls and the rest are boys.About 50 others do come on irregular basis.
With the completion of the Library and the Mobile clinic facility being provided, space will be the only thing that will limit the number of children coming.
As for the postal address Yes it is G22,Garden,Lusaka but it is not yet under the name of YOFOSO,it will be under that name early next year when we pay rentals for a commerical Box.
As for my no.it is 260977109586.
Thank you very much for the support I will be sending photos of the works on the Library this weekend when the Internet rates are lower.
Mulenga
Hi Mary (and everyone else!)
Could I just clarify with you- are we looking at a container worth of books to Garden or a much smaller shipment? I'm just curious as to how much the shipping costs will be. I see on the BIG website that it is USD$3000 for a container- or USD$50 for a box to go with a Peace Corp worker. Just wondering if you know any more about the costs as the website doesn't give much more info.
Thanks!
Carolyn
Hi Carolyn,
Welcome to Garden and thank you for joining us. Mary will have the details but we are looking for smaller shipments. The space that is available at the center is limited. We have been discussing a next step to work on a mobile library serving a larger area but those are plans for later.
Greetings from Auckland
