Help Mulenga in deciding what is needed to set up the library
Status:

Step:
1
Help Mulenga make a list of what is needed for the library.
Think of a list of books needed, a computer, possible inventory.
Does the room need painting/repairs?
What about furniture?

Hi Mulenga,
Regarding the volunteers I have a few suggestions
1. setting up a circle of friends(teachers, churchleaders, craftpeople) for the library who could volunteer some of their time and knowledge to the library. Throw a thank you party for them once a year.
2. set up a prefect system. This works really well in schools and youth camps in Ireland. Some of the older visitors to the centre could be given responsibilities(e.g. looking after a younger soccer team) or in the library dusting books, story telling ,making sure the notice board is up to date etc. You change responsibilities often This gives them a sense of ownership and of course they are rewarded with valuable Yofoso centre certificates! What do you think?
3. try recruiting volunteers from abroad. Many people choose to spend their holidays volunteering nowdays.
Of course as suggested by Carolyn a paid librarian is the best. Hopefully Feed the Minds will see this too.

Hi Sinead,
Thank very much for your valuable suggestions.
I would be most grateful if you would help in organising volunteers from abroad. It a bit tricky to find local volunteers, but we are not writing off this angle.
Did you recieve the application I completed?
Mulenga
Dear Mulenga,
Congratulations on the progress so far. :-)
I will collect a set of CD=ROMS that can be used by children and youth for self=learning. Alternatively, you could have a young mentor/adult hold a session on an afternoon with a bake sale/social or something to gather funds. This occasion could also be used as an opportunity to collect books.
Another idea for collecting funds is a raffle sale. In the U.S. it is usually a dollar. I am not sure what is the minimum there. You could have a 50=50 raffle with half of the proceeds going to the library. Another alternative would be to have a local business provide the raffle prize and the ticket money would go the to library.
Another option is to identify orgs that would donate computers. I will also try...
All the best,
rema
Hi Rema,
Welcome to Garden.
Thank you very much for your suggestions. It is worth trying all options open to us.
The children here do a lot of drawing and in the last three years I have quite a collection.A friend from Austrilia and myself are working on a publishing a calender using some of this drawings which will be sold and the proceeds put in the project.I do not know if there is anything else we can do with these drawings such as hold an exhibition with them.
What do others think.
Mulenga
hi Mulenga,
The calendar is a great idea. Another idea for the drawings are Christmas or Thank you cards. What do you think?
