Hi There All and Welcome,

As neigbours, I am sure we like to hear news of our neighbours so please use this part of the site as the garden fence. :o)

Also, if you feel to converse about anything to do with the village or slightly unrelated issues at leisure a little more informally, this is also the place for that.

Mundawanga is a local word used to express ownership. It simply says "My Field." The majority of our community members do just hear about itn though it located within Lusaka. They are unable to go there because they are financilly handicapped. However, it only takes you 15 minutes to drive south of Lusaka City. There are a variety of animal; lions, zebras, populay Phoenix elephant, An American Bear just to mention a few. Many children hear about them from school, films and friends. These animals are conserved for tourism and education. Last weekend that is where we went to take a brief break from the loud music played around our compound's tarvens and bars. we had some games and later on let our boys and girls enjoy the swimming pool to the fullest with the popular sliding supertube. Thereafter, we were taken on a tour around the park. Our team had the clearest opportunity to see almost all the animals at close range. As an observer and participant 'am sure they did not only enjoy but also learnt one or two things. This can be confirmed from the narrations they make to those who remaine behind especially their parents and guardians. If you want to have prior informattion about popular Mundawanga, where we even have an American black bear when you happen to visit Zambia, just visit us and ask one of the children we went with and they will give it to you. For me it gives me joy :-D to see these disadvantaged children and youths enjoy and learn from our natural resources. Moreover to have access to the nriches of our country. We hope to have another trip of this wonderful resort. We are also hoping that all things be equal to take a few children to this weekend's Agricultural and commercial show, which believe it or not is just a walking distance from our residence but because of the cost, these children just hear about it from friends or radio. To children and youths, going there means so much for them. However, this is not the first time such an epidemic has rocked Garden. Over half of the children involved in our programmes at YOFOSO had reported cases of small pox. Besides that, almost a quarter of them had cases related to bilharzia. For small pox, we tried to approach the necessary authorities but this proved futile. AS for bilharzia, the team from KIDSAFE project visited us and gave the first dosages to some of our children. they promised to get back to us after a month but since September we have not yet seen them. The agony we have in Garden is that despite being a highly densely populated compound, it has no single government clinic or hospital. Imagine 70,000 people without a clinic!!! :-? The only clinics we have around are the private ones who have also in turn taken advantage of the situation to hike the fees and prices of the medicatiuons. Currently, we are struggling through YOFOSO, which has meagre resources to let this situation come under control.. Even though we go to these private clinics, it seems they don't get to the root cause of the pandemic for their interest is to make money as their business thrills. One may wonder why we haven't been to government hospitals or clinics? Well the agony is that after you walk to the nearest clinic which is located over 12 km from Garden, you end up being given a prescription of medicines you should buy hence you walk back to the drug shops in Garden. The cost of these drugs in most cases is beyond the reach of an average family in this area. It is so disheartening to see small pox doing its rounds in the compound and be so hopeless in terms of helping fight the outbreak. We thought of sharing this challenge with the neighbours in case one happens to share the same burden before and thence be able to offer the practical solution. At 18:00hours it is back to Literacy development and our read and write programme which is conducted by the children themselves start and end at 19:30hours.These days however becausewe have awaken the children's reading potential we have a number of children who come through requesting for books to read hence the need for that library facility. One would think that 19:30 hours would signal the end of the day,but it is the beginingof another busy 2 and half hours. This time around the children come to watch TV while others do there homeworks and the children we sponsor to school prepare part of there food.Watching T.V because if they are asked to go home they would end up in wrong places and only go home when it is time to sleep, which is usually not earlier than 22:00hours. This iis then a weekday at Yofoso centre. And as can be seen we still have a lot to do in terms of our programme and to the centre as a whole. Please visit our photo gallery. A week day at the Garden Centre in the making, called Yofoso centre, starts quite early.

No children stay at the centre, children from the neighbourhood come to the centre for the four programmes offered here and these are Playtherapy,Sport,Literacy Development and Pyscho-social life skills enpowerment.
Under the Literacy Development programme,in which our Library project falls, has in the last two years seen a number of children develop any interest in going to school and only the economic status of their families makes most of them just end up with this desire.with the limited resources we manage to raise, only fifteen of these children are able to realise this desire to go to school.

It it the elderly of these children who come the earliest at the centre to come and prepare food the group will take to school, for they all go to the same community school.Their classes start at 08:00hours and go on to 16:00hrs,Monday to Thursday and upto 12:00hrs every Friday.Hence everyMonday morning to Thursday morning they come to prepare their food.

When this group has left,it is playtime as the other children, both those who do not go to school and those who go later in the day, come to play.Their number is limited only by the space andpersonnel to be with them.We have been encouraging the children to return home during the lunch hour ans as a result during this period only about 5 or 6 remain and these are usually those whose parents or relatives can not manage to feeg three time a day.

After 14:00hours the children enage in creative arts and currently this is mostly drawing, resources are a factor, upto around 15:30hours when it is time for Sport.Under Sport we currently have only Chess,Table Tennis,Basketball-though we only have a ball with no court, and Football.Football or soccer is the most popular sport in our country and to this end children who come to our centre have formed a team called Young Gunners.Believe or no we have three teams, one for Girls, one for boys below 12 years and the other for those over 12 years.
