Questions raised by Garden's Elders

Status: Finished

Updated questions raised by Garden's Elders as of 20/10/2006

1.CLIMATE and LOCAL HEALTH:
At the moment, with the onset of the rains there is a lot of Garbage which I hope when I receive the digital camera, I will send the photos.

Question:
How can you help in that area and being aware of the cholera outbreaks?

2.THE LIBRARY NEEDS A COMPUTER.
On our part, we are trying to get the mini-library take off the ground with the little resources we have. I hope you are considering helping us with the computer.

Greetings All Neighbours and Visitors, Friends,

Thank you for joining or visiting here.

Please post and say hello! Tell us why you stopped to look in here, we are happy to hear of your interest whatever it may be.

Any questions about what is needed-please ask!
Any ideas--please post!

We have three discussion areas at this village and
we have them so we can get lively about the issues.

This discussion area right here is for posting about any existing centres in Africa. So if you have experience with existing centres please share: What’s available? What works? What doesn't work? What's your advice...and so on.

And if you wish to do research on this please explore the Internet and post relevant URLS with a summary of what the sites you offered can offer Garden.

Thank You!

Facilitating this project and all your input,
Rubyana Arendn

Hi everybody!
This is my first post on nabuur. I'm a very new & inexperienced neighbour. "Africa Bridge" is a non-profit organisation. It supports various orphanages, children centers and it tries to facilitate the access to education. Its initiatives and programs focus on children and young people. It successfully operates children centers.

Hi!
Orphanage Africa is a non profit organisation dedicated to supporting orphans, women, young adults in Ghana.
OAFRICA runs a children's home and community centre in the village of Ayeniah. The web site contains a description of how they came up with the idea, found a location and other administrative issues. I thought it might be helpful.

Greetings Julie and Emily,

I believe we all have unsung talents, so new or not new to Nabuur, your contributions are so great! Welcome! And it is good to see a summary with the links, so useful!

Looking at the websites questions about what help they provide for Garden began to form:
Such as:

Do they describe or provide for centers such as Garden hopes to create?
Does the website contain useful guidelines for the needs and requirements of Garden?
Does the website provide any finalized documents or even questionnaires that can be adapted or used by Garden in the development stages?

Questions like that... and there must be more good questions arising as we look at links provided...

What can you do help further?

Look at any, all of the website links that are presented here for answers to these
questions and also to other questions you suggest as useful.

I feel: Let's get the information organised for practical use from the start. What do you feel? Good idea?

We can -add in- comments as to what is useful per website listing for each website...

And then see what informational recources arise by topic….

...and create a good resource file....

I am sure, :o), that our practical and down to earth ways we can share input into this naturally really well, and this will be so useful here! Please make suggestions as they appear in your minds and hearts :o)

And, everybody, keep those new links coming!

In a follow on post I will post -the beginnings- of ‘a resource file’.

Blessings to All,
Rubyana

Greetings again, and so soon! ;o)

See below--the very very beginning of material organised so it can be useful and easily used and accessed....all is in the intent!

If anyone wants to volunteer taking on the organization of the materials and comments thatcome in via all your suggestions, this is the place to volunteer being the ‘Resource File Overseer’. ;o)

Blessings,
Rubyana

The sites shared all need to be carefully looked at for RELEVANT information, I had thought some information as relevant--till I took a closer look, it's best to gather that which is very practical finalised help, or guidelines for self help, etc...
( I believe)

RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO GARDEN:
They help in Ghana, and tend to help the communities around Orphanages,
as a way to help the Orphans, as special approach. They present many
of the issues Garden may face, and therefore have relevant information on site.

Summary:
Architects without Borders is cited as helping Orphange Africa. So I looked at their site:

Their Mission Statement includes: We support communities in developing visionary planning, leadership and self determination models upon which communities can define and achieve their own aspirations.

SO, I add them here as a link.

Dear Neighbours,
and Greetings Once Again Emily and Julie :o)

I have just added an ".xls file" in the Resources section for this discussion. (see the -View resources- link above)

That is a spreadsheet file ( Microsoft Excel).

It is one way of organising links and information
onto a file. I have added the links on this discussion so far into that file.

Please feel free to use that file, or suggest ways
of organising the material in whatever ways seems best to you.

Blessings,
Rubyana

Hi everybody,

I was in Barcelona for a language course these last couple of weeks, and I didn't have the chance to do much research.
http://www.streetchildrescueghana.org/
I found Street Child Rescue a very interesting web site. Though it is not an actual youth center, the Street Child Rescue program focuses on improving the education and ultimately the future of young people in Ghana. It provides counseling, sex education, training. Basically, it tries to offer guidance and advice to children and young people to make better choices in their future and not allow themselves to become corrupted by their environment, or their antourage. Perhaps, taking a look at their programs could help with raising awareness among the young people from Garden.
Street Child Rescue has some interesting ideas incorporated in their programs :
- they organize "meeting points" , places where children and teenagers can interract with eachother and make contact with the staff
- they make direct contact with the homeless children at the places where they sleep, or work
The photos are also very compelling. I think they reflect the success of the program inside the community.

Hope it helps,
Julie

Hey Julie,

Great, and yes, Barcelona is a great town, and especially in summer, I am sure you had a great time. Thank you for the link, that sounds really interesting. We are getting some great links together here. Eventually our next step may be to collate the ideas into a useable package for Garden in some way. You know how to make all the information we gather have practical use for Garden. Something to think about for the months ahead of us, when we can all keep pitching in, hopefully.

Hope to hear more from you and all neighbors here!

Blessings,
Rubyana
