However, this is not the first time such an epidemic has rocked Garden. Over half of the children involved in our programmes at YOFOSO had reported cases of small pox. Besides that, almost a quarter of them had cases related to bilharzia. For small pox, we tried to approach the necessary authorities but this proved futile. AS for bilharzia, the team from KIDSAFE project visited us and gave the first dosages to some of our children. they promised to get back to us after a month but since September we have not yet seen them. The agony we have in Garden is that despite being a highly densely populated compound, it has no single government clinic or hospital. Imagine 70,000 people without a clinic!!! The only clinics we have around are the private ones who have also in turn taken advantage of the situation to hike the fees and prices of the medicatiuons. Currently, we are struggling through YOFOSO, which has meagre resources to let this situation come under control.. Even though we go to these private clinics, it seems they don't get to the root cause of the pandemic for their interest is to make money as their business thrills. One may wonder why we haven't been to government hospitals or clinics? Well the agony is that after you walk to the nearest clinic which is located over 12 km from Garden, you end up being given a prescription of medicines you should buy hence you walk back to the drug shops in Garden. The cost of these drugs in most cases is beyond the reach of an average family in this area. It is so disheartening to see small pox doing its rounds in the compound and be so hopeless in terms of helping fight the outbreak. We thought of sharing this challenge with the neighbours in case one happens to share the same burden before and thence be able to offer the practical solution. Though it is not an actual youth center, the Street Child Rescue program focuses on improving the education and ultimately the future of young people in Ghana. It provides counseling, sex education, training. Basically, it tries to offer guidance and advice to children and young people to make better choices in their future and not allow themselves to become corrupted by their environment, or their antourage. Perhaps, taking a look at their programs could help with raising awareness among the young people from Garden. Street Child Rescue has some interesting ideas incorporated in their programs : - they organize "meeting points" , places where children and teenagers can interract with eachother and make contact with the staff - they make direct contact with the homeless children at the places where they sleep, or work The photos are also very compelling. I think they reflect the success of the program inside the community. {by Julie Iacob, Romania} Kasisi Children's Home http://www.kasisi.org The largest orphanage in Zambia, is without doubt a remarkable place. The website, supplies extensive information about the activity of the children's home. It is very organized, containing special wings for babies, older girls, children infected with HIV/AIDS. It also shelters a house for street kids. Kasisi Children's Home also tries to help the children to find a job, or follow a higher education. {by Julie Iacob, Romania} Children In Need Network http://www.chin.org.zm Children In Need Network is an association, formed in the early 90's, by several children organizations in Zambia. I decided to write about it, because it focuses on training programs, advocacy, community awareness campaigns. The CHIN member list contains numerous orphanges, youth centers, national organizations. The members of CHIN benefit from support with information, lobbying, training, assistance with their project. CHIN is also associated with several international organizations. In a later phase, perhaps the youth center in Garden could enlist the help oh CHIN, or join CHIN as an associate member. Street Child Rescue http://www.streetchildrescueghana.org
I found Street Child Rescue a very interesting web site.
Street Child Rescue has some interesting ideas incorporated in their programs :
- they organize "meeting points" , places where children and teenagers can interract with eachother and make contact with the staff
- they make direct contact with the homeless children at the places where they sleep, or work
The photos are also very compelling. I think they reflect the success of the program inside the community. {by Julie Iacob, Romania}

Kasisi Children's Home
http://www.kasisi.org
The largest orphanage in Zambia, is without doubt a remarkable place.
The website, supplies extensive information about the activity of the children's home. It is very organized, containing special wings for babies, older girls, children infected with HIV/AIDS. It also shelters a house for street kids. Kasisi Children's Home also tries to help the children to find a job, or follow a higher education. {by Julie Iacob, Romania}

Children In Need Network
http://www.chin.org.zm
Children In Need Network is an association, formed in the early 90's, by several children organizations in Zambia. I decided to write about it, because it focuses on training programs, advocacy, community awareness campaigns. The CHIN member list contains numerous orphanges, youth centers, national organizations. The members of CHIN benefit from support with information, lobbying, training, assistance with their project. CHIN is also associated with several international organizations. In a later phase, perhaps the youth center in Garden could enlist the help oh CHIN, or join CHIN as an associate member. (Just a thought ! ) {by Julie Iacob, Romania}
