Sustaining and improving a social centre for Children at risk

Over the last two years, the foundation for the social centre has been laid and programmes are up and running. A library has been opened,a cultural dancing and Drama group has been formed and a business Centre has been started. A number of challenges still remain, chief among them being acquiring more books for the Library, paying school fees for the children and acquiring sport Equipment and furniture for the Library.

As indicted above a lot has been achieved and the children who initially did not have education as a top priority are now motivated to go all the way.The idea of hanging out on the street is slowly being replaced by a desire to spend more of their time at the centre and engaging themselves in a number of activities that are done here.

The idea of a social centre which meets the various basic needs of the children and Youth is now being recognised as one of the most effective way of disengaging the children from bad vices so that they can be engaged in constructive ones. This is evidenced by the number of people and groups coming to visit and experience the happenings at the centre. It is thus important that the centre is made self-sustaining and the also improved.

In this phase of the project, the call is for gathering information and online discussion with regard to enabling the wishes for a Centre as outlined in the Introduction above. Also the programmes carried out at the centre as contained in our document surely needs to be revisited and be improved on.

As hanging out on the streets was perceived as the most likely future for these young people, the community now views the future of these children differently as the behavioural changes that have occurred in the last two years have brought out the unlimited and untapped potential of the children. The elders are behind the running of the centre so that the needs of these children and young adults are met.

Let's be inspired: What can we do to create a garden of life, hope, empowerment; for children in Garden?
