Hello,
I work with computers every day. Although my IT job is currently in another field, I have had some jobs working with web pages, and am comfortable making basic webpages. I might be able to help you.
I'm afraid my schedule is very booked until the end of May, but we can brainstorm and get materials ready before then. Here are some things to think about before creating a website:
Questions:
Who is your audience? What is the purpose of the website? Is it for parents to learn more before sending their children to the school? Is it to obtain funding & resources?
What language will the website be in?
Do you have someone there that will be able to maintain the website once it's complete?
Materials:
1) Lots of photos would make the website look great. Pictures of the building, children, administrators, and various activities would be useful. Getting these now would be a good step. Do you have a digital camera, or a scanner so that these could be emailed to me?
2) Content. What information do you want on the website?
Having answers to these questions could help start your site.
Let me know how I can help.
Thanks,
-Sean
I received the following as a reply from Josephat Bwire [slightly edited for clarity]. I am reposting it here so that other members of Nabuur may also provide assistance. Josephat, in the future, it would be good if you could "Reply" to the message, rather than send a private message so that everyone can see.
Josephat: "I am very grateful for your effort. Our village will discuss the above issues and on May 7th, 2010, we will send you comprehensive information about the desire and content of the website. The group has no digital camera, scanner nor a computer. It will take the group time to hire and have it then send you the photos. Kindly we ask you to assist the group acquire A LAPTOP & DIGITAL CAMERA. These items are required for website management and doing other duties of the group. Kindly think about the issues, because we are in need of them. Kindly respond. Thanks in advance."
We may want to split these off into separate tasks to be completed:
*) Acquire a Laptop for Githurai village
*) Acquire a Digital Camera for Githurai village
In the meantime, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks,
-Sean
Just a quick recommendation. How about a netbook? It's a small laptop that can connect to the Internet and can have a built-in camera. Just an idea.
More later...
This is a good idea, but the problem is the group is financial unstable to acquire one because in Kenya is around 300 dollars and as per the group finance it has devoted most of its finance on education for the children who have resumed the second term.

Josephat, if it's going to take a while, you can do a website without pictures and them add them later. You can use pretty backgrounds, with just words. Then give yourself time to hire the photographer.

Have a wonderful day.
Thank you for the advise and am looking forward on discussing the idea with the group members on this coming meeting. Thanks for contribution.

Hello again,
I'm not sure where exactly your village is located, but on the map it looks like it is near Nairobi. I found that there is a not-for-profit organization, called "Computer Aid International" and they have two headquarters - one in London and the other in Nairobi. Computer Aid International provides professionally refurbished computers to educational institutions.
It looks like there is a charge of about $65 per computer, if there is no shipping. Most of their shipping is done from London, but perhaps that could be waived if you could work with the Nairobi office. They do not have laptops, and they warn that refurbished laptops often do not have very good battery life at all, so often times a desktop is better.
The website to apply is located at: http://www.computeraid.org/enquire.asp You can review the terms and conditions and see if there's anything else to be aware of.
I tried to find information on the office directly in Kenya. Here's what I could get:
4th Flr,International House,
Mama Ngina St,
City Centre, Nairobi
Kenya

africa@computeraid.org
On the issue of the website, I look forward to hearing more about your meeting, and what material you would like to have on it!
thank you very much for the research, our group is located in the outskirt of Nairobi and very soon will visit the Nairobi office to know more of the procedure. Thanks in advance.

Another place to try for a donated computer is at "Computers With Causes". Their application form is located here:
http://www.computerswithcauses.org/application.htm
Their application looks easier than the first one I sent and I don't see anything about additional fees. The computers are collected in the US, but in their application they do have a box for "Country" so I would still apply.
am very grateful with you research, kindly proceed and apply for the village as the group reads through the website of the organization. An information required feel free to ask.Thank you very much.
