Hi Dennis,

It would be good if you could list the main aims and objectives that you have so that new neighbours can better understand how they might help.

My husband and I visited Gulu and some of the IDP camps there in 2007.

You may have already heard of this ngo but if not, worth taking a look at their website as they operate in the Gulu area: www.outsidethedream.org Providing a Brighter Future for Uganda’s Orphans and Former Child Soldiers
Outside the Dream Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 in the U.S. and NGO in Uganda

There was also another ngo called Invisible Children who were doing some really good work in Gulu on the education side.

Take care,
Carol

Mary, Roberts, Kenan

I am exceedingly glad to welcome and thank you all upon joining this village.

This whole project is a new attempt at providing basic ICT services to communities in Gulu, who because of their economic inability, currently fall short of accessing ICT services.

When you have time, I implore you to post some brief introductory text here so that other neighbors who would subsequently join us would get to know you better, especially in terms of interests and expertise.

I am obliged to thank you in advance for your efforts in upcoming discussions. Your joining this village, to me is testament enough that we share the same goal – promoting the use of ICT for change – especially in view of the fact that ICT can turn around the vicious circle of “unacceptable conditions”.

Thanks,

The focus is very much on how local people can use computers to help them in their everyday lives - basic computer and adult literacy training, telling stories, sharing information, links between schools etc. The centres also earn income from providing business services to the local community, but I don't know if any of them have become self-supporting yet. I have no idea whether they could help you directly, but I am sure you can learn from visiting one or two of their centres. I have read your vision (which sounds similar to the above), but please can you tell us more about how far you have gone with the practical details, and how you would like Nabuur volunteers to assist you? Hi Carol and Dennis

Parts of the IT systems I work with are as old as I am, so I don't have any particularly relevant skills when it comes to the technical side of setting up a computer centre!

However, I have been involved with a few other computer-related projects on Nabuur in the past - Acoke, Jinja Central, Uvira. Dennis, I remember putting you in touch with them and a few others, were you able to learn from what they have done?

I am sure the one thing they would all tell you is that getting the place to make enough money to cover running costs, while still providing free/low-cost training to those who need it, is not an easy thing to do.

You might also want to join the ICT for Development group http://www.nabuur.com/en/group/ict-development/project as this could be a place to find relevant information and skills.

Dennis, do you know Stella Akiteng, the LR of Nabuur Omiito village? If you don't, I would be happy to introduce you.

The reason I suggest talking to her is that she works in Gulu with an organisation called BOSCO Uganda http://boscouganda.com/ who set up small-scale computer centres in rural areas.

Once this is clear, you can set up tasks for the relevant areas. The clearer you can be about this, the more likely you are to attract the right people, although there are no guarantees as the whole Nabuur site is quite quiet at the moment.

If you don't know how to set up tasks etc, I can help you, there is also a guide at http://www.nabuur.com/files/attach/2010/02/task/Website%20manual%20for%2... - this was originally produced for Facilitators, but contains more info on setting up tasks than the LR's one does.
