What subjects should be in the computer training?

Find out what skills are taught in most computer trainings. Are there standards that are used internationally?

Also very important is: which skills would help the orphans best in the future?

Hi Dennis,

I think I got the idea about the 'inside' of life! The project should serve a goal, instead of being a goal by itself. I asked Paul to discuss the ideas mentioned with Joseph and Aaron (the board of BEHOD), and to tell us which ideas they think would be most feasible... also to prioritize. Their answers will steer the developments.

I agree we need a clear picture of who will be studying (and what) in order to prepare the right training programs.

In any case a basic course 'how to use a computer' should be there, as well as a typing course and the use of standard business applications. :-)

Let's await BEHOD's answers for further focus.

Thanks Pelle

Yes, sure, I did not mean to diminish the basic experience of 'tools of trade' you set out, just to add to that. I know that many adults here, though surrounded by computers, still regard them as alien!

cheers

Pelle,

I am happy with the summary as you captured interesting issues that came up. Yes, the issue of children also came up though I thought the focus of the project is not about children. However, I must also say that your assumption about children also applies to adults. My experience shows that a number of adults 'know a computer' but cannot name the parts. I think we should not take things for granted.

Yes Dennis,

I think we should develop a vision to enable to enable us move forward. But would it be for children or adults? Our vision should be to deploy computer technology in order to empower young people with hands-on skills and opportunities to grow in their ambitions and careers. Most people actually join the employment bracket in developing countries after finishing high schools also called secondary education. Interesting, all of them if not most will have know only two Office applications, that is, word processing and spreadsheets to push them to the job market. We should go a step further. Internet surfing makes some sense there as it introduces somebody to the work and it’s actually a source of leveraging learning and knowledge.

Pelle,

I thought the issue of maintenance of hardware and software was very critical. A policy(s) should be in place to support it. Again the issue of sustainability of the computers and life time of the whole project can not be under estimated. Contingency measures in case of any uncertainties should be in place.
