Help Secure Mosquito Nets for 200 Children

Status: In progress
Step:
5

The government of Uganda is warning of the EL NINO rain due to start this mouth. The JINJA EAST VILLAGE is located along the banks of Lake Victoria. If the rain really comes as it's predicted, then our village will be in danger of malaria. We have a saying which says "Prevention is better than cure."

We have over 200 children who are in need of mosquito nets and blankets. We shall be grateful to any who may be willing to help in any way which can lead to getting that assistance.

Thank you!

Michael and Esther

Perhaps someone could contact the government to see what is going on and when your nets will be arriving. Free mosquito nets in Uganda Every home in Uganda is set to receive free mosquito nets, according to the government. Efforts are being stepped up to stop the spread of malaria in the country, with insecticide-treated malaria nets being distributed from the beginning of September. James Kakooza, the state minister for primary health care, stated that the government will import 17.4 million mosquito nets, New Vision reports. "Whether they use the nets or not, they should be put up in the house," he said, adding that if mosquito nets can make the difference in other countries then "we can also do it here in Uganda. It is just a matter of time". Children and pregnant mothers will be prioritised in the distribution programme, but all Ugandans will eventually receive nets. In addition, indoor spraying of DDT has been approved to kill mosquitoes, which could further reduce the threat of malaria. In the last three years, there have already been six million mosquito nets distributed to Ugandans. However, malaria is still the number one killer in Uganda. and a similar announcement at http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/12/685040
dated June 2009 with priority to be given to children and pregnant women. Perhaps someone could contact the government to see what is going on and when your nets will be arriving.

Free mosquito nets in Uganda
Every home in Uganda is set to receive free mosquito nets, according to the government.

Kay,

Your input is important to many villages on nabuur. Governments in any country provide for the very basic needs of the population, which are necessary for people to stay alive and functioning. I am Ugandan and its on this basis am commenting about the newspaper article about free mosquito nets. Free mosquito nets have been offered by international organisations for the whole of my life and that is a very good 29 yrs. Am sorry to say this but if they ever reached the people who need them most, why would children be dying of malaria still. These mosquito nets are stolen by officials and resold expensively to the poor who cant even afford them in the first place. This data is even available with the BBC who did a documentary about Aid in Uganda and Sierraleone. If we believed all we read in newspapers / tabloids then every poor Ugandan would be having a small benefit of $10 every month. Dont know any who has got it. The major benefit of Nabuur in such situations is the barriers it breaks, the ability of helping those who havent been helped or help hasnt reached yet and have to wait another 20 yrs and only if they are lucky will they be alive to see the day. Vijay, help and assistance locally in Uganda isnt easily obtainable. You can even walk for a whole 3 months to be able to see the person concerned and still even when you manage to see them no assistance is forthcoming.
