Local reps introduction
Of the approximately 2 million orphans in Kenya half are found in this Province alone.
Cases of child headed households or orphans living with their old grandmothers (some as old as 92 years) are very common. These grand mothers are too old to fend for these orphans. The traditional African extended family arrangement of caring for orphans by sharing them out among the remaining relatives has been shattered by increasing modernity and the accompanying increase in the cost of living which makes makes people want to take care of only their children. This village is inhabited by a tribe called the Luo who are known in Kenya to practice several traditional/cultural practices that centre on sexual intercourse. This has meant that the highest number of HIV/AIDS deaths in Kenya are found among the Luo since over 90% of HIV transmission in Kenya is through sexual intercourse.
It is these orphans we seek to help through ideas, skills, network and resources of neighbours to enable them live the life they would have lived had their loving parents been alive. Welcome to our village and let us walk the journey together.
