VISIT BY KABONDO FACILITATOR BARBARA BRIGGS AND UN VOLUNTEER RAUL CACERAS

Kabondo Village facilitator Barbara Briggs and UN Volunteer and Nabuur Neighbour Raul Caceras visited Kabondo on the 18th July 2008.

Kabondo Village facilitator Barbara Briggs and UN Volunteer and Nabuur Neighbour Raul Caceras visited Kabondo on the 18th July 2008. This was a whole day visit that started in the morning and ended very late at night due to the very demanding schedule put up by the community organising committee. Barb and Raul had the opportunity to accomplish the following:1. Met and talked to 2,320 total and partial orphans in two large meetings.2. Met and talked to 852 guardians/foster parents3. Addressed 2 community gatherings with a combined attendance of approximately 6,000 people.4. Carried out home visits to families already supported by the project in form of provision of uniforms, shoes, text books/exercise books, christmas gifts.5. Visited a sick widow taking care of 3 orphans and whose dilapidated grass thatched house was repaired through a donation from Ineke Boorsma.6. Visited a six year old HIV positive total orphan staying with an ailing 87 year old grandmother in a home in which all people have died of HIV/AIDS related complications save for the two. All the other seven houses in the home stead which belonged to the woman's sons and their families have all fallen down and the home looks ghostlyt and  abandoned.7. Barb met and was introduced to all the seven men and women who form the advisory board of Kabondo Poverty Alleviation Organization.8. Barb, Raul, Local Representative Eric Ochanji and the Board members donated to Got Rateng' Primary school the 125 reading books donated by Biblionef foundation in the Netherlands. The books were presented to the headteacher of the school in the presence of the teachers and pupils of the school.9. Barb donated 70 re-usable sanitary towels donated by Deanna of GOODS4GIRLS in the USA to vulnerable and poor teenage girls of Got Rateng' primary school, Got Rateng Secondary school, Oriang' Primary/Secondary schools. The re-usable towels are a first in the community and we want to get the feed back of the girls after use because GOODS4GIRLS has promised to supply more if there is need. Many girls do not go to school during their menstrual periods as a result of the inability to gain access to these towels. We thank Deanna for starting up a sponsorship project that will definitely have far reaching changes in the confidence and performance of so many ladies.10. Barb and Raul also visted a community member who has a demonstration farm and has allowed community members to learn from him on better farming methods and the essence of self sustainability in agriculture. The farmer has poultry farm, dairy farm, vegetable and maize farm amomg others.11. Barb also was introduced to the local Government leaders including the Location Chiefs who are the Government administrators in the communities/villages.The visit was very succesful and we thank Barb and Raul for sparing time to meet the people of Kabondo and see first hand the challenges faced by orphans, guardians/foster parents, people living with AIDS and communities struggling to gain agricultural sustainability.Earlier on the 15th of July Raul and Barb organised a meeting of all Local Representatives from East Africa at the Jokas hotel in Kampala which was basically to learn more about the work the LRs were doing, the challenges they were facing apart from facilitaing sessions on volunteer work, monitoring and evaluation, networking and collaboration among others. they also brought in experts from CAWST and connect Africa who gave a moving presentation on water and sanitation. EricLocal Representative

Hi Pelle,

Thank you very much for the encouragement. We were very happy to host Barb and Raul who came across to us as wonderful and very interested people in the work Kabondo is doing. We are happy to have known them, hosted them and counted them as friends of Kabondo.

Hi Barb

its so nice to read of the visit to Kabondo, it is very wonderful job. this reminds me of the saying 1000 miles begin with one step.whatever help you have extended to the people of Kabondo will always be a foundation of the bright future they are going to have. the towels given to the girls is of such a great help to them.the books issued will definately get them to earning PHDs and degrees in future. Kudos for the good work
