Find Personal Items for the Children
Status:

Step:
3
There are 120 orphans lacking necessary personal items such as clothes, personal hygiene supplies, sanitary napkins, etc. Please find and contact organizations, businesses or individuals that can donate these items to some or all of the children.

Hi Barb
Do the orphans go to the same school and/or are part of a local church, childrens group etc?
The reason I ask is that it may be possible to link up with a school, church etc in another country to do some fundraising/send items.
I won't be much help in finding such a partner (lack of contacts, plus the fact that I am part of another village that would be top of the queue if I did ever find anyone), but other neighbours may be!
Also, is the plan for long-term or short-term support? I realise that is a question that may become clearer once you and Eric are able to sort out the difficulties with finding all the documents.
Mary

Ali Baasit
Thanks Ali. If you wouldn't mind, could you please list the organizations you contacted so others don't contact them again?
Mary: I now have the project plan and I will post it here momentarily, so I hope it should answer most of your questions. Any that are not answered, I will find the information out from Erick.
Barb
Thanks Barb
I have had a quick read and everything makes more sense now! I see that the aim is to provide temporary support with personal items until the family income activities are up and running.
One question which will be relevant when approaching organisations for funding, equipment etc:
Is Kabondo a registered non-profit organisation in Kenya? From reading the doc I get the impression that they probably are, but it does not actually say so as far as I can see.
If I or others have more questions on the doc, where should we post them now the planning task has been completed?
Mary
Hi Mary,
Yes the Kabondo Poverty Alleviation Organization is registered in Kenya. I will make sure it gets added to the document as it is important to mention.
If you have any further questions, I think the best place to post them would be under the project talk or under any topic that is relevant to the question. Does that seem okay? Let me know if you have a better suggestion!

Hello, This is my first time doing this so I am a little confused. Can an individual send some supplies (either personal supplies for this task or educational supplies for the other task). If so, how many supplies would the person have to send to make it worthwhile. How would they go about doing this? Also. are there more specific lists of which supplies are needed?
Hi Zhasmene,
Thanks for the questions! Yes an individual can send some supplies directly through Eric the Local Representative of Kabondo. I can give you all the mailing information.
Regarding the number of supplies: there are currently 120 orphans that the project is trying to assist. They have been able to assist 15 so far. Any amount would be great - even just helping 1 child. The decision is yours.
Regarding specific lists, I will have Eric post/provide a list of specific items, but generally, personal items have included shoes, clothes, personal hygiene/sanitary supplies for girls, and so forth. Educational supplies would include pencils, colored pencils, books and uniforms which would have to be purchased locally. Text books are also needed, but I am not sure of the exact ones. I will try to find that information out for you as soon as possible and post.
For more detailed information, take a look at the project plan under the resource section of Kabondo.
Thanks!
Barb
Hi Zhasmene,
Thank you very much for joining Kabondo. As Barb has already indicated we have so many orphans here but we decided to start with 40 families each with an average of 3 children. This brings the number roughly to 120 orphans. The personal items include the following:
1. sanitary pads for the girls among the 120 orphans
2. toothbrushes/tooth paste
3. mathematical sets
4. pieces of soap for washing clothes and bathing
5. at least 2 civilian clothes per orphan to wear when not wearing school uniform which has to be washed regularly.
6. body lotion or jelly to keep the skin smooth (at least 1 big bottle of vaseline petroleum jelly per kid per year)
7. school socks and school bags. Most of the children carry books in polythene bags which wear out nearly every 3 to 7 days.
8. panties (at least 3 for every child).
While these were the major items named during the needs analysis meeting between the Local Representative and the orphas early in the year (photo to be posted in the photo gallery), other needs may vary according to the individual family situations and we will take note of them as we continue with family visits and implementation of other project activities.
Shoes: The shoes needed should be preferably black (this is the colour used in nearly all schools in Kenya). However any other colour is desirable especially after school and during weekends to ensure the school shoes do not wear out faster and to keep the children from jiggers and dirt even while they are at home. The sizes required vary as follows:
1. size 2 - 17 children
2. size 3 - 26
3. size 4 - 27
4. Size 5 - 22
5. Size 6 - 28
Though most of the orphans have not had shoes before and cannot say their shoe number with certainity, we estimated their sizes through placing the feet on a piece of paper and drawing. Shoes are a major need since most of the classrooms are dusty exposing the children to jigger infections which is a common phenomenon in this region.
Text books: there are a number of text books recommended for all grades in primary education by the Kenya Institute of Education. These books can be purchased locally from Government recommended text book outlets.
Thank you very much. Do not hesitate to contact me or Barb through this medium or email should you require any further information.

Hello everyone,
As mentioned under the bicycle task, Carson Graham Secondary School has donated personal and educational materials to Kabondo and they are being shipped by Africa Book Project. There are quite a few items, but more are still needed. If anyone can assist, please let us know.
Barb
Hello Barb,
We are new joiners at NABUUR, and our idea is to collect a lot of shoes for the orphans. Is this still needed?
Can you tell us where exactly the projectplan is on the site.
Thanx for your reply
Ingeborg & Marieke
Hello!
Welcome to Kabondo and thank you for offering to assist with this task! Yes we still require assistance with this, so please do move forward with your idea. Both Eric and I are available to answer any questions and help in any way we can.
To answer your question, he project plan is located under "Resources For This Project" tab at the bottom of the "Our Project" page. If you are having difficulty finding it, I have included a copy here. Also, in a previous message, there was information on the numbers and sizes of shoes needed. I have added it again here:
Shoes: The shoes needed should be preferably black (this is the colour used in nearly all schools in Kenya). However any other colour is desirable especially after school and during weekends to ensure the school shoes do not wear out faster and to keep the children from jiggers and dirt even while they are at home. 2. size 3 - 26 children
3. size 4 - 27 children
4. Size 5 - 22 children
5. Size 6 - 28 children
As mentioned, black shoes are best, but additional pairs would be helpful as well so they don't wear out the school shoes.
If you have any other questions, please let me know!
Warmly,
Barb :-D
Dear Ingeborg n Marieke,
Thank you very much for your interest in our organization and your offer to help collect shoes for the orphans. The orphans in Kabondo are very many, more than 5,000 but only 120 very needy are currently registered with our organization and the number keeps on growing as people approach us almost on daily basis with requests to be included in the project. As Barb has already told you we have some shoe sizes we had given displayed earlier. I feel you should not be limited to only these but feel free to collect all sizes and colours you lay your hands on as they will go a long way in helping all others and furthermore some children have never had shoes in their lives (only slippers in some cases) and may not know their shoe sizes with certainity. The other option as Barb advises is to raise funds and then we purchase them locally.
I want to thank you very much for your offer to help and it is my sincere hope that this is the beginning of a fruitful and longer lasting partnership that will serve to alleviate the suffering of these disadvanatged children.
Sincerely,
Eric Ochanji
Local Representative
Dear Eric and Barb,
We are busy trying to find shoes for the children. But we have some questions: are sandals or Crocs (Do you know Crocs?)also appropriate for the children? And when we find shops or fabrics willing to donate the shoes, can they make some publicity about it? For example, can they use photos from the children with there new shoes?
We'll hope to hear from you.
Marieke en Ingeborg
Hi Ingeborg and Marieke,
I hope you will find shoes for these children, I am busy collecting clothes and toys.
We also need money for this project.
I also live in Holland, maybe we can work together?
Ineke Boorsma
Hello Ingeborg and Marieke,
Thank you very much for the efforts you are making on behalf of the project. To be frank with you these children do not have anything to put on at all. Sandals are also very good for them. Though i donot know what crocs are, if they are things they can put on then why not. May be they are just things i know but i have not met the name Croc.
Secondly there is nothing wrong with publicity using the children's photos since it is for a just and worthwhile cause.
Thank you and all the best in your efforts. Kindly contact Ineke Boorsma so that you can find ways of pulling efforts and working together.
Eric
