Income Generating Activities - Help Develop Criteria for a Micro-loan Program

One of the strategies put forward by the community to address the long-term support of the children, is providing opportunities for income-generating activities. Through skills training and business management, as well as the provision of one-time loans, we wish to help the community and the children be able to provide for themselves long-term.
In addition, funds set aside from the IGA will be used to purchase goats, which will provide milk for the family.
In this first step, we would like to gather input for the community to make decisions in the following areas:
1. Developing criteria for the selection of participants in an Micro-loan project
2. Developing criteria for assessing and selecting business types and/or ideas
3. Developing loan terms and repayment terms
4. Develop terms of continued participation in the Micro-loan project
The task has been previously started with some discussion - but we would like to focus it more on the above 4 areas.
If you have experience with micro-loan projects or can refer us to sources, please help post!
The information will be compiled and provided to the community to help them guide their decisions.

Hi Jacky
Melissa is right - unfortunately the email notifications are not working at the moment, they have not been since this version of the website was launched last year.
The best way to keep track of what is going on in a village is to join it as a neighbour. To do this, click on the 'Join' link. You will then see new posts to the village listed on your My Nabuur screen when you sign in to Nabuur, and you will also receive any newsletters that Barb sends out via email.

I have higher expectations !!

e-communication from the project partner is very poor and rabbit counts records does not look good. With poor e-communication, problem solving cannot be done effectively. When project partner took, Aug 2008 rabbit counts were good. I was there again Jan-March 09 and the numbers went up. Nrs are record low now which means that people in charged are living with the problems and not solving them. (this is a common problem - the fear of failure with silence)

Lack of communication.... the downfall of our relationships and society! Such a common failing with human beings :O)
The project appears to have so much potential. I hope it is more successful in the future.
Hi Everyone,
Great news! The funds raised through Give Meaning have finally been released and the community now has the funds!!! They are beginning the work on the microloans.
Thanks to all the people that donated to make this happen. It has been a slow go - but it's going. I'm looking forward to hearing about the types of businesses that the women will operate.

Hi Everyone,
As mentioned elsewhere, the funds have been released and 3 groups have formed. Eric mentioned that the groups will take some time to form and become well established, as the women have to build trust for eachother.
I think the next steps for us on Nabuur regarding the microloan program, is to help support the development of the groups and ensure they succeed.
I would like to ask volunteers to find information on key success factors for a microloan program and from there determine what is feasible to do in Kabondo. For example, some programs indicated they provide business training. Maybe Kabondo can develop some training materials for the women.
If anyone has information on what other projects do, please provide it here. We can compile a list of Key Success Factors.
Regards,
Barb
