Key Success Factors

Groups of women taking part in the Microcredit Program have begun to form in Kabondo, thanks to funds received through other tasks.

Learning from the experience of others is very important and can lead to successful projects. We would like to compile a list of Key Success Factors for operating a microcredit program. We are looking for learnings from other projects that can be tried in Kabondo.

This task requires researching other projects on Nabuur and elsewhere and finding out the key factors to success. Or, if you have experience running a project, then provide your insights here!

The list will be used to help build a stronger microcredit project in Kabondo.

Thanks very much for the link.

Is there any possibility that you could review some of these and see if there are common factors to success and provide them in point form here? That would be most helpful for us. If you are unable, maybe someone else has some time to do so?

This is a model that does not need funding from outside. The steps could be broadly as under:

AA
A group is to be formed. Membership of the group could be through a share certificate. Each share could be priced as mutually agreed by the group. The group could nominate a 5-6 member committee from among themselves to manage all affairs of the group. Members on this committee could be selected through ballot from among the members annually.

BB
The amount collected as share money could be deposited in a bank. This money would earn interest in the bank. Corresponding interest is to be reflected in the accounts of each member separately and the members' accounts are to be maintained by the committee.

CC
As more members join, the deposits in the bank would increase through the remittances of shares allotted to the new members.

DD
From the funds that collect over a period, the committee can decide to start providing loans to the members. The maximum amount of loan could be decided by the committee depending on the funds situation. Repayment of the loan could be in installments, and rate of interest on loan repayment could be kept low so that members can benefit.

EE
In case a member wishes to resign, the total deposits by this member including interest, minus the loan due, could be paid back to the member and his share certificate could be cancelled by the committee.

FF
When things are working fine over a period, in case a larger loan is required, the group can negotiate with the bank for interest rates, and repayment terms etc.

GG
Modifications in the scheme for the benefit of the members could be done as the scheme progresses. The basic philosophy must be to benefit the members in all cases.

HH
Keep the scheme simple, and basic, and easy to understand by all. Do not complicate through intricate mechanisms which members find difficult to understand or implement.

The focus here must be to keep everything very basic and very simple. Just the skeletal scheme. A good deal of trust and faith has to evolve among the members, without which the scheme will simply fall apart and pack up. The amounts of money are to be kept at minimal levels. Let it 'laterally drift' for about 3-6 months to a year. The $1200 mentioned in your post - I presume these are external funds. In my opinion, external funds need to come in later, when the group has evolved into a homogeneous, fully-aligned entity, and is eager to play with larger funds. At the startup stage, each member must commit funds to buy the shares of this group. Unless they commit their own funds to start with, and learn to manage and iron out the grey areas (which will be in plenty at the initial phases), they will not be able to move to the next phase where external funds are to be deployed for their benefit. Since, as you mention, the $1200 has already been deployed with the group, this amount can be considered as 'seed money' for the program, to be simply deposited in the bank, and not to be used unless there is a critical emergency. In the bank, this money will earn interest, which will benefit the group. The startup phase must be managed by the group through their own funds. A share certificate renders an official note to the whole process, and you will notice each member keep it as a valuable document. Unless the group is tied to this activity through their own personal funds, no matter how small the amount is, you must not expect the group to stay together later. Other aspects mentioned in your post are all relevant, and will need to be addressed as the group goes along. I have already mentioned the leadership issue in my earlier post - the group needs to be managed not by a single person, but by a committee of at least 5-6 members from within the group. Members on the committee must be elected though polling from among the members once every year. A committee member must not be on the committee for more than a year. Business training is certainly required, and can be addressed when the group plans specific activities. Meetings related to these business activities will naturally follow from the business plans. About group size - a single group for membership, and several groups for specific business areas could be thought of. Optimal group size would again depend on the specific activity. Some activities may need participation from more members in a group as compared to other activities. This must be essentially considered as the group goes along. Options for repayment - you could keep the interest rates for repayment low. But keep the terms same for all members without discrimination. Relaxations will lead to a cascade of defaults, and even a large group can pack up in no time. Measures of success - is the group still around at the end of one year? Beyond this, the financial status must be the barometer for success or failure. Mentor relationships - this is dangerous territory, since money will always invite unwanted influences. Mentoring is not to be allowed to cross a dotted line. Let the group decide where the dotted line is. I think I have addressed all issues in your post. Essentially, all these are to come up after the startup phase. Let the startup be gradual, since only then it will last longer. Hi Barb,

In the first phase of the startup, the group has to first feel comfortable with the whole process.

Personally i have come to realize that forming groups of like minded people or people who have trust for each other is a slow process. People want to work with people they can entrust with their money. We have been doing this for a long time now and when we received the money which we wanted to loan to the members through a system where they take overall charge of their own destiny, a problem came in formation of groups. Each person wants to look at a fellow member very carefully, so that questionable people who may kill the dream are not put on board. I have allowed this process to move slowly so that we get it right from the onset. The idea of share certificates is good, but i feel what we have is a very close alternative because the each of the groups will have in their midst members they trust and can work with, they will choose the officials of their group, loan their members autonomously according to extent of need and based on the trust they have for each other be the guarantors for the loan. Since they live in the same community and the members are carefully selected, no member wants to stand in the way of the other members' progress. Members meet weekly or in a fortnight or monthly to accept collections and can easily track potential defaulters who are identified and disciplined accordingly. We will borrow some of your suggestions and mix with what the groups decide works for them and see what good can come out of this.
