Am new and thought it nice to introduce myself. i am an Accountant in an hospital in Eldoret. i have been wanting to join such a group to help the less fortunate for quite some time now. thank God i will realize my dream through you. i hope to help in any way i can and am sure am going to enjoy impacting positively on a child's life. am married with one child. thanks again for your good work.
Thank you very much for joining this village and for the passion you have to lend a helping hand. If you go the tasks section you will read a number of things we have been trying to do to help the less fortunate children in our midst. Though most of them have not been achieved, we are happy that a few things have been a success. We launched a fund raising site on givemeaning to raise funds for a micro loan project for guardians of orphans and vu;nerable children. We managed to raise $1,200 in a span of two years and currently the guardians are organizing themselves in groups of 10 to be able to benefit from this money and start up their projects. We needs 7 groups of 10 women each (they are mostly women).This process is taking a while because these women have to form groups of people they trust to repay loans, people willing to work hard and people who are responsible enough to work to help uplift the living standards of the children in their care. 3 groups have already been formed and i hope the rest will complete soon.
Once the groups are formed, they will all be trained by other women who are already doing this in another village called Nyakach and then we will give each group start up funds to loan their members. While this is going on you can choose to help in any other area of your choice. Feel free to contact me anytime or our two facilitators Rebecca or Barb.

You mention you are an accountant. Are you interested in offering these skills or are you interested in helping out in other ways? I ask because I think there may be an opportunity to provide some training in bookkeeping to the women in the microcredit program - once it is fully up and running. I am not sure what the plans are for providing business training in Kabondo, but other microcredit programs offer this and find the women to be more successful.
Eric - can you fill us in on the plans for the future regarding training in business? Maybe this is something we can work on in Nabuur - that is finding resources and materials for business training. Any thoughts?
Because the amount raised on givemeaning was far less than what we anticipated to raise for this project, we sat together with the committee and agreed that what we have should not be channeled to anything else more than direct loans to the guardian groups. A business training is desirable but out of reach at the moment. We will only allocate a very small portion of the money just to transport two or three women from Nyakach and their local representative to Kabondo to share their path to success (cohesion, loan system, repayment, documentation, identification and retention of members, successes among others). This is not a professional training but a very vital village to village interaction on what works and what does not work from people who have tried it out.
I think we will still need a business training that encompasses all you have talked about, documentation etc once this is up and running to help the women build a strong, self reliant network that will reach out to others. we welcome neighbours and well wishers to come up with ideas on how best this can be done.
Have you had any contact with Kimilili village, also in Kenya? They have run some successful business training, and are intending to do more - see various articles at http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/kimilili/news
If you contact Lia or Tanja (facilitators) or Rev Wasike (LR) they might be able to give you more information, see if you can use some of their training material. Even if you cannot afford to run a proper training session, it may still be useful to know what information they gave to their women.

What I was suggesting, is if there are volunteers from within Kenya that would be willing to travel to Kabondo at their expense to provide some training - even to a small group for a short period of time, then there should not be any expenses to the community or the committee. Maybe there are professionals living in Kisumu that would be willing to offer up their time and some expense to help the women of Kabondo? It seems that there have been many neighbours on Nabuur that are in the vicinity and have graciously offered assistance, but have not been provided an opportunity. I know that Kabondo is a bit of a drive from Kisumu, but there may be ways to work something out. Just a thought...
If anyone in Kenya would be willing to offer their time and expertise to help the women of Kabondo receive some business training, I'm sure it would be well received!
